Is there an escape from customer service?

In my hunt for both financial stability and career happiness, I have found that there are indeed major obstacles. The uncertainty of whether I can overcome this outweighs the knowledge of a clear possible path to freedom from this god awful field I’ve been imprisoned in since age 15. And there is absolutely no one with a key or advice on how to dig myself out. Customer service is the bane of my existence, and I am forever going to be unhappy if I must endure one more year working in this miserable field. Sure, I’m great at what I do, and have made an art out of providing service with a smile…but inside I’m wailing. We do so much for people who don’t even care about us. People who just want something, and could care less about who we are. I could die tomorrow and they wouldn’t care because they take for granted the service I provide.

Right now I work from home, taking calls for a transportation company for people who need to get to and from their appointments. They are in different parts of the USA. I’m also an independent contractor. I chose this line of work because I’m able to make my own hours…however, I’m finding that it’s tougher because I have to beat other people to get my hours, and I’m lucky to get the amount that I do, plus I have autopays, and taxes that I owe…and I haven’t been able to save. It’s a constant struggle. We’re supposed to be able to get up to 40 hours…but the hours go so quickly. I’ve also somewhat grown accustomed to scheduling myself off on Fridays, because wow…the call volume is ridiculously high.

But yes, I work from home…and it’s great to save on time getting to and from work…but I do miss the socialization aspect of a public work place…though, I do not plan on returning to work in public. It’s just too much stress, and judgement. Before I worked from home, I never made over minimum wage. I was always the one who got stepped on. They liked to walk all over me, and I was always going out of my way, above and beyond…but never getting anywhere from it. I’m done with that now. But the question I have now is, how do I make working from home work for me? What other path must I take to free myself from the chains of customer service?

@SethGreene531 maybe, but…I kinda want out of the field all together. I’m tired of hearing people complain. It’s wearing on me in a bad way.
