Is it true that fat increases the female hormone estrogen levels in the body in men who have lots of fat?

Yes, it's true. Excess body fat, especially visceral fat (fat stored around the abdomen), can increase estrogen levels in men. This happens due to the enzyme aromatase, which is found in fat tissue. Aromatase converts testosterone into estrogen, leading to higher estrogen levels and potentially lower testosterone levels.

When estrogen levels rise too much in men, it can cause symptoms like:
- Decreased libido
- Fat accumulation in a more feminine pattern (e.g., chest and hips)
- Gynecomastia (enlargement of male breast tissue)
- Fatigue and mood changes

This is one reason why maintaining a healthy body fat percentage is important for hormonal balance in men.
@ABCDEF7 I've heard that too but maybe it's not true for all men? My bf is obese and his libido seems just fine to me. Though he does often have trouble finishing 😔
Also, my brother gained a lot of weight in the last 2 yrs or so due to being a heavy drinker and living off fast food and junk food. The huge fat belly he has now seems to not have decreased his sex drive. But, when it comes to doing the deed he can't perform.

@Piglet2007 You're right—excess fat does not affect all men the same way when it comes to estrogen levels. There are many other factors that play an important role.

Some men naturally have higher or lower aromatase activity due to genetic differences.

Genetic variations in androgen (testosterone) receptors affect how the body responds to hormonal changes.

Younger men with high testosterone may not experience significant estrogen-related effects from fat accumulation.

Regular strength training and cardio help regulate testosterone and reduce fat storage.

Men with high fat but also high muscle may not experience as much estrogen-related disruption. More muscle mass means higher testosterone production and better hormone balance

Yes. Fat stores estrogen in both genders.

ANOTHER thing you should know is that men who love cologne, and douse themselves with it daily are likely to have low testosterone. Scented soaps, shampoos, deodorants, lotions, laundry detergents, fabric softeners...even those little home plug ins that pump scent into the air...ALL rob the male body of testosterone.
