Tsunami warning!

A major magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck early Wednesday in far eastern Russia. Tsunami alerts have been issued in parts of Alaska, Hawaii, Japan and throughout the Pacific. A tsunami has been measured in the northern Pacific and the United States Geological Survey is warning that tsunami waves are possible as far away as Antarctica.😧

Waves normally decrease in amplitude with respect to distance, by an inverse-sqare law, if allowed to pass unimpeded.

Being detectable among normal wind-powered waves as far away as Antarctic is one thing but I wonder how high it would be?

If the wave is 1m high at only 10km from source, what would it be 1000km away across open, deep sea?

I think only 10mm but I am not sure if I have calculated it correctly, nor if that rule applies to a tsunami wave.

@beermeplease yes, should be less. Can cause much more damage at nearer locations like Japan and Alaska. 3 metres expected at Japan. Not hit yet.

No. She wasn't. She specifically predicted a disaster for July 5th. And it doesn't seem as though this is going to be as catastrophic as the 2011 one.

"Predictions" where the claim is, "if it doesn't come true w/in 15 yrs, add another 15 yrs" aren't really predictions, are they?

@SomeMichGuy To be fair, Ryo Tatsuki is a woman. Still, earthquakes and tsunamis in one of the world's most seismically active regions are going to happen every so often.
