They are generally accurate to a fair degree.

I live not far from an exposed coast so the Shipping Forecast gives a good overall pattern of wind velocities (direction and speed) and their changes, precipitation and visibility. Not temperature though, normally irrelevant for maritime purposes.

Inland, the forecast for a wide area (1000s of square miles) can differ somewhat from what happens locally (100s sq. miles), partly by the effects of hills, but also because normal weather systems are hundreds of miles in diameter and contain a lot of turbulence, fronts, and temperature and humidity variations.
