Should women be trained and issued firearms?

Since it's mostly men that commit violent crimes, especially with guns, shouldn't women be encouraged and sponsored to carry their own protection?

There's plenty of empirical evidence that shows that more guns leads to more gun violence. Arming us won't stop violent crimes. It would most likely do the opposite.

@Wendy33 and my offer to come see the area is still open. I respect your opinions, but do disagree
Wendy33 · F
@Notanymore That's ok. Thank you for the offer. If you still support the idea, you can get me a gun.
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@Wendy33 do you want to learn to shoot and learn gun safety? If nothing else, it's an experience
Interesting if anecdotal - I lived a lot of my life where there was little police protection. I once called them and the couple of Staties who patrolled the area were trying to get to us but encountered at least two situations that had to be dealt with before they could move on. It took hours for them to arrive (about 4 1/2 hours).

They called at least twice to explain the delay. They asked “Are you folks okay until we get there?”

I said, “We are - as long as everybody understands nobody is coming into this house we don’t want here. There’s a shotgun here standing in for you.”

I always thought this was ‘rural myth’ but the officer actually said, “If you have to shoot him, drag him into the house, after.”

The area where I lived was remote and sparsely populated in places, lots of hunting cabins unoccupied much of the year - but crime rates for breaking and entering and home invasion were virtually zero.

Why? Because everybody understood that homeowners had guns, and stood prepared to use them.

One of the reasons women don't commit more crimes with firearms is that we generally aren't as interested in them and not being interested in them doesn't cost us any man points.
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@Doomflower I don't think not being interested in guns costs a man "man points"
Doomflower · 36-40, M
@Notanymore no it doesn't always but in some circles a guy who doesn't at least think guns are neat is a sissy.
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@Doomflower I think that's more media and advertising.

Absolutely! Teach your daughters to shoot because a restraining order is just a piece of paper.
Spokeskitties75 · 46-50, M
@curiosi you should teach them to drive too.

They can get over their abusive ex’s quickly! 😂

Funny you say this... I was at Cabela’s yesterday and all the people being helped at the gun counter were women! It was awesome, actually

Wraithorn · 51-55, M
I think most women don't want that and rightly so.
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@Wraithorn please don't say most when you express opinions. I personally believe that half if not more women, particularly in my part of the world, would be open to learn more about guns and carrying for protection
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Notanymore Lol, well it's my opinion so I'm entitled to say most. I'm speaking from experience with most women in my past life. Your viewpoint may be different and that's fine. In a discussion everyone's viewpoint counts because it adds to the big picture.
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@Wraithorn I agree.... there's a lot of moving parts that one person or one like-minded hive can't see it all
AnarchoMetalchic · 36-40
I'm a woman who is trained to use a firearm. While I agree that it should be encouraged, I don't believe one should continue to encourage if the other party is not interested. Chances are, something will eventually prove to that person that knowing how to use and own one will benefit them.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I just love this... The answer to the question of what to do about guns and the problems they cause is to add more guns to the question!
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 I don't know if the problem is guns, or the people that use guns
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@Notanymore let me tell you my view from a non American point... Everywhere else has gun control and while the occasional idiot emerges once every few years, they don't have the problem the states have with on average know than one a day..... You figure it out
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@ozgirl512 and how many of those occurs in places where guns are readily available and carried?
bobby1975 · F
Men mostly commit violent crime, but men are also far more likely to be the victim of violent crime.

How does that fit with your suggestion?
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@bobby1975 men as well should be able to learn and carry protection against violence

I think it’s just about choice if someone man or woman has a gun in their home they should understand how it works for safety reasons. But carrying isn’t something everyone is comfortable with. The option is available to those who want it.
