Why?

Okay, let's keep this civil. I want to know why owning a semiautomatic, military style firearm, with quick change magazines exceeding let's say 8 rounds, is so important to you. Why? What do you use it for that you could not otherwise do with something like a Henry Long Ranger.223 Remington, or let's say a Model 48 9mm S&W Revolver?

I have other questions concerning the whole firearms issue, but let's start with this.

Before you launch into a tirade, know that I started shooting at around the age of 10, am a combat veteran, a retired Mastersergeant, own and always have owned, at least one firearm, and support our 2nd Amendment. I sincerely want to know your reasoning.

1. I binge watched all episodes of the Walking Dead. This shit is scary.

2. What if you're out hunting, and a herd of deer, splits up, and surrounds you?

I tried to make the case, on SW, more than once, that assault weapons, equipped with large capacity ammo clips, are not justifiable, in the public hands. There may be that one case in a million, where it works out to your advantage, but in the absolute majority of cases, these weapons will end up hurting/killing innocent bystanders.

Some argue that they have military experience. So, MAYBE they have fired a weapon in action, not in practice. It does not qualify them. If you're deployed, into a hot zone, the boundaries are well defined. You know who the enemy is, and what your mission is. In a situation involving civilians, you are not qualified, and you may cause more damage.

If you're awakened by intruders, from a deep sleep, whip out your AR-15, and start shooting, you will likely end up killing your teenager, who snuck back into the house, at 3AM, AND the neighbors dog, and the 5 year old, sleeping in the house, several blocks from you.

If you still think you need a weapon for self-defense, then a shotgun is a better bet, but only if you're well trained.

So, let's drop the "hunting" and "self defense" pretense. It's about something else.

Conspiracy theory, protection ourselves from a tyrannical government people: newsflash. Back in the day, the government had muskets, and you had muskets. Today, the government has F-16s, Tanks, missiles, and all kinds of things that can evaporate you. You need to calm down, and pick up another hobby.

Foreign invasion: read the above paragraph.

Penile extension: grow up, and get a sports car instead. A bunch of SW'ers continuously brag about how many guns they have.

PS: I read through the thread, and I see you picked up a case of mrbrownstone. The guy invades my threads as well, and either attempts to switch topics, like he did here, or simply posts sophomoric insults. I usually delete them, following a warning.

Thank you for your service.

@Northwest I was trying to engage in some logic with people, but the mrbrownstones of the world appear to not want to, or simply can't, use rational thought. I so agree with you on people without actual combat experience and the training to back it up. Actually, even then, I've seen way too many cases of near friendly fire deaths, spraying and praying, etc., even by experienced combat vets.

Yes.

I've just read through this thread, you asked an unbiased question respectfully in hopes of gaining some insight to belief systems. I'm sorry, frequentlyme, I don't believe the ammosexuals here are capable of intelligent thought out answers. To people who aren't controlled by the opinions of TV and radio personalities, they can have a discussion about this, but here, they can't answer because they have yet to hear TV and radio personalities give an opinion on this topic. They can't think for themselves. I agree and wish you good luck!

I'm going to throw in my 2 cents even though I am not an American.
I live in South Africa and I was a policeman for 21 yrs. Civilians in S.A. are not allowed to own weapons like assault rifles because it is not necessary. Also, in most countries more innocent people are hurt by firearms that are kept for self defense than criminals.

The USA has possibly the biggest and best equiped military and police in the world. The civilians there do not need assault rifles etc. in order to defend themselves.
It's clearly a money making thing and placing the value of money above that of innocent Human life is just not right.
Wraithorn51-55, M
@frequentlyme It's a pleasure. I think sometimes people's emotional attachment to things prevents them from being able to be civil.
American gun laws have become part of many people's culture there. People generally feel fear when their culture is threatened. When people are trioubled by fear it becomes difficult for them to be civil or reasonable.

Attachment can be the great facricator of illusions which prevents us from seeing truth.
frequentlyme70-79, M
@Wraithorn Absolutely correct; but the way through our fears is to face them.

@frequentlyme Good point !

Great question, I鈥檇 be really interested to see if you get an honest answer that can contribute to a conversation as opposed to the name calling and deflecting that is so common in these instances. Your dignified, intelligent response to those comments were refreshing.
LyricalOneF
Just wanted to tell you that I love this question and your refusal to be drawn off topic by those who deflect because they don鈥檛 have an answer.
CoffeeFirst56-60, F
That is the exact same thing I have been wondering. You pose a excellently worded question. I don't think SW folks are the kind to answer it.

I don't know who can defend or justify those types of weapons but someone must be doing it. All guns are not created equal.
frequentlyme70-79, M
@CoffeeFirst You are probably right, but I keep hoping their is intelligent life out there 馃榿
CoffeeFirst56-60, F
Good luck with that one. Lol @frequentlyme
Keepitsimple51-55, F
They are only needed in war and in the event of an apocalypse.
CoffeeFirst56-60, F
@Keepitsimple I'd like one for zombies, if they ever show up!
frequentlyme70-79, M
@CoffeeFirst Right after coffee, of course. 馃榿
CoffeeFirst56-60, F
@frequentlyme Of course! Priorities!
MrBrownstone46-50, M
Funny. Every time an illegal immigrant commits a crime,no democrats scream about immigration laws.
MrBrownstone46-50, M
@frequentlyme Ha. I won this debate.
frequentlyme70-79, M
@MrBrownstone Yep, and pigs fly too.
frequentlyme70-79, M
@MrBrownstone I keep thinking of your last response, and I think you actually did answer the question "Why?" It appears you view everything as a kindergarten fight over who wins a game. Sad, really sad. This question deals with life and death, not a game.
why? because i have a micropenis
GeniUs56-60, M
There is only one real answer and if you haven't seen Jim Jefferies in action it's worth a look:

@GeniUs I鈥檝e seen this before. Love it.
GeniUs56-60, M
He's right, isn't he? Just say, you like to handle guns and everything about them. I'm not bothered but I have a friend who spends considerable money (because we're in the UK) doing just that.
GeniUs56-60, M
In case the British come.
frequentlyme70-79, M
@GeniUs Hmmmm, I think I heard that happened a long time ago. Wonder how that worked out for them? 馃榿
GeniUs56-60, M
Well luckily everybody had military grade weaponery so it worked out well for the Britons who didn't like paying taxes but said they liked 'religious freedom' ;) (it's only funny because it's true!)

I owned one semiauto, but I gave it to my cousin to own. I only got it because of my dad. Just before my dad past, he wanted me to have something of his, and it was his semiauto. I'm not into guns, that's why I gave it away.
