We need more fighting games with a realistic damage system

Games like Bushido Blade or the Deadliest Warrior games where a match can be over in a matter of seconds because the impact of the fighters' weapons can be fatal, like it would be in real-life. Or if an otherwise lethal blow connects with an arm or leg, that limb will be unusable (or severed altogether) for the remainder of the fight and that player will be at a disadvantage, but can still easily win themselves if they land a well-placed strike. Sure, one might see that as being less fun than the traditional fighting game style of beating the snot out of your opponent until their health bar is depleted, but I think it could actually make it more fun, depending on how you look at it. Knowing a single shot can kill you instantly can make matches even more intense. It would force players to strategize rather than going in mashing buttons, the heightened difficulty making it more challenging and competitive. Maybe I'm in the minority and there's a reason not many fighting games with realistic combat exist, lol. I've never been terribly into fighting games myself, except for Mortal Kombat, but I would play a realistic fighting game if someone made another today.

I don't know if i remember ever playing something like that. Buy that would be great.
One reason it's not done is as you say, the length of matches. In the arcade rooms where you pay money, you want to feel like you got a return. And having a match over in two seconds doesn't tend to leave the majority of people feeling that.
Maybe a sort of hybrid can be done. Once the traditional health bar is low enough then limbs become at risk.

I like fighters, but I hate that the model is to sell a game with half the roster and trickle out the other half to be sold piece by piece.

@Straylight Microtransactions. I loathe them too. Blatant cash grabs often used as an excuse to release unfinished games. It’s really damaged the credibility of a lot of big name developers. That’s why I mainly play indie games nowadays and will wait a good while after a AAA game is released before checking it out.

@Ducky I liked the Guilty Gear series way back when. I wanted to get the new one, but the rosters comes mostly with new characters and the ones I remember as dlc. I hate the idea of buying a season pass for a game.
