Sticking with 2600 simply because it feeds a great memory. Back in the early 2000's i found a nib 2600 at goodwill with a bag full of games. I hooked it up and was playing Asteroids. My oldest girl who was tiny at the time watched for a bit and announced "its not very good". What a toddler burn...i was a tiny bit hurt but greatly proud of the sarcastic person i had spawned. (Edited because I can't type)
I think even calling the PS1 and N64 retro is pushing it. Their really just the early lifestyle modern games era. That's when Video games really changed and became what they are now as opposed to what they were then
That said Super Nintendo is the undisputed apex of retro style video game hardware.
Just 8 bit warm? I honestly think NES and Master system are tied. NES had the classics but Master system was a beast if you were lucky enough to play one at the time.
The generation before them? Atari has all the fame, but neither Atari or Intellevision could hold a candle next to Calecovision hands down the best of the early 80s
