What’s the relationship between Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong?

@Ducky I remember when I was a kid I told my cousins, with whom I often played the Donkey Kong games, that Diddy and Dixie were cousins, but then sometime I reread the manual for DKC3 and saw that Dixie and Kiddy were cousins, but I don’t remember getting any clarification on the relationship between Dixie and Diddy.
