Have you ever traveled by train...

For an extended period of time?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I think the longest journey I have made took roughly 10 hours but did involve two changes with the consequent waiting between trains.

Each of the three trains made several stops too, although their "cruising" speed was probably around 100mph on the fast, and up to about 70mph on the two slower, services.

Not in a while. I'd love to see trains make a come-back in the U

:) what you are describing is the way the airline first-class was before they abolished the CAB. Airplanes generally then flew at about 66% capacity, with lots of elbow room, overstaffed attendants, meals and flew to less than profitable destinations. That ended with deregulations .... the old question about whether the transportation business should be like public utility companies, or free for all businesses. For both rail and aviation, I think we went the wrong direction. Go by air if you have to get there by tomorrow and if you do, you pay a king's ransom for the ticket. If planning a leisure or adventure trip in 6 moths from now you get that ticket for peanuts. Isn't that backwards?

I think that big city traffic congestion would help make rail travel more acceptable. We drive trough the big Texas cities routinely and every time we drive though Dallas or Houston at rush hour my comments are to the tune of "I think I'm getting too old for this."

Spent 2 days and 2 nights on a train. Went from Toronto to the Pacific west coast, arriving in Vancouver after meandering all through the Canadian Rocky Mountains before we finally arrived. I went First Class with a sleeper compartment all to myself and it was probably the best trip I've ever taken. [/c]

Flying will get you there faster, but flying doesn't always come with a social atmosphere like the train does![/c]
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@swirlie Exactly. Not everyone is in a hurry :)

Look at all the people who take cruises, and they mostly just make out and backs, returning to where they started.

Rail transportation has the promised of a social and enjoyment level somewhere between air travel and ship travel, without all the intensity of auto travel or plane travel.

I agree! Train travel can be romantic or can lead to romance because of the pace, whereas airplane travel is too fast and ship travel is way to crowded.[/c]
