I Like Trains

I come from a railway family. My grandfather is a station master. He works on a branch line in Wales. It's used for carrying coal. In the school holidays I go to work with him sometimes. He's called a station master but he's in charge of the whole line. He travels the line. And we travel in the cabs of these huge Diesel engines. They are so powerful. The line is steep but they have, I don't know, about 40 wagons of coal. The drivers say it's most difficult going down cos the wagons are pushing against the engine. They are so skilled. The drivers, not the wagons. Sometimes we have to go by bus. Because there isn't a train. My grandfather goes free because he's allowed. But he has to pay for me because I don't work on the railway. So the drivers take the money and instead of doing a ticket they give the money to me and say, "Here you go, Blodyn, for an ice cream."
Sometimes we stop in a signal box. The line follows the river. And there's one box, Raven Crossing, where the signalman spends the time between trains fishing. So we often go home with trout or salmon for tea.
