Teslas are all over the road here in BC Canada. Very reliable, but they haven't released anything new for a decade. I think Musk is bleeding away all of their money for research and development.
BYD is just setting up their first two dealerships here. They will be a hit too. Youtube shows some interesting innovation with them. They are using a different battery tech, one that isn't prone to blow up like Tesla is using, and they charge a lot faster.

If you want to end up with a "brand" consider Toyota electric vehicles.
My wife & I rented an electric Toyota CHR in Norway earlier this year, and it was a great car to drive. As a brand, Toyota has a strong reputation among the most reliable cars in the world. Plus, Toyota dealerships are everywhere.

Most of my life, I’ve driven BYD. Bring your (own) door.
BYD = Brings Your Drinks, right???

Maybe avoid the Swasti-car and go with BYD.
From everything I am hearing from people over here, they're great cars, cheaper than paying for for the name of the others and it's not like any cars are built to last more than 5 years any more anyway.

I've never driven a BYD but I've had a Tesla model Y for a few years and it's been great. Not a single complaint about it. Comfortable, loads of interior space, rapid acceleration, just fun to drive. I've driven the model 3 as well and that was very similar.

My partner has a Tesla, and she loves it, but she regrets getting it because it supported one of the most evil men in the world. So if that kind of thing matters you I'd go with an ABT.

If you are investing in stocks, Tesla is a leading choice.
I am still against EV as a personal car.

At least 15 people have died in the United States after crashes disabled Tesla electronic door systems and trapped occupants inside burning or damaged vehicles. So maybe scratch the Tesla

Tesla but expensive. BYD only if you are tight on budget

Well I'm gonna guess asking for a comparison. You're definitely not in the US because you couldn't get a BYD car here if you wanted to. That said, I don't much care for EVs, but I sure as hell wouldn't buy something built in China for my everyday driver. You have nothing to go on historically reliability-wise. After working in quality assurance my whole life, I would also say Tesla started off bad in the area of assembly. But according to reviews, it's improved. Great work in the past two years.

BYD isn’t an option here as its import is banned for now, and Tesla has fairly mixed reviews with some people loving it, others swearing it’s the most expensive mistake they’ve ever made.

I have no experience with neither, but you need to choose between inherent quality (Tesla) or Chinesium 'quality' (BYD).
Also, consider what sort of after-sales support you will get. BYD here in Australia is very bad for service and support. I don't know if BYD or Tesla actually own their own dealership and service networks in the USA or here in Oz.
I have two cars - Saab sedan (220 k km's) and diesel Toyota landcruiser (almost 730 k km's) - both 1992 build. No intention of replacing either, but personally I would *not* rate Tesla or BYD if I was to look at new vehicles. Just my view of course.
Saab no longer exists, and Saab cars have saved my life more than once in the past. Toyota's have well-established quality and resale value propositions. I haven't driven Korean made vehicles (Hyundai, Kia), or any Chinese made vehicles (EV or non-EV).
Any EV (as well as current gen non-EV's) are totally 'connected' cars and are all inexorably moving towards making everything about vehicle ownership a 'subscription' and requiring constant connectivity to the 'ecosystem' for forced firmware updating, etc.
