It's definitely in the realm of the rich! Only times I've been overseas have been in the mid-1990's and I flew economy.
When I used to fly a lot domestically (adelaide - darwin or the other way several times a f/n) for work I got into a higher frequent flyer status but never got offered any upgrades.

You used to be able to go up to the gate and request an upgrade. They would let you know if you were selected. Worked for me once. I loved being able to sleep laying down, with a nice blanket and steak for the meal.
I would never pay for that myself though. Just put me in a crate with the animals in cargo, no problem.

Haven't flown in decades, generally went first class because I didn't fit in non-first class seats -- and the flights were to see my parents at Christmas, so they paid for the tickets. ;)

We flew first class a lot on longer flights as kids when we’d travel with my dad. He said that on long flights, he wanted to have the extra legroom.

About thirty years ago my employer put me on Lufthansa business class from London to Frankfurt-am-Main. It was a one-off - they never did it again! It was nice enough - they served breakfast with the smallest sausage I have ever seen. No idea what the price differential was but you're on the same plane and you get there at the same time so probably not justified.

I flew first class a few times on business trips, so I wasn't paying for the tickets. I enjoyed it.

Got free upgrade a couple times on FreqFlyer status when a first class seat was open, only time I ever had the experience.

Yes. I travel often and fly business class about 25% of the time. Most are upgrades.

I've never been on a plane
@Cigarguy That is kinda cool. If you take up skydiving, your first flight you jump out, then you can say you have been on one airplane, but never landed with it.

@JamesBugman I have no desire to ever go skydiving
