I'm about to get a lot of hell for saying this but I don't move over for drivers merging onto the highway.

Constantly shifting into the passing lane increases congestion, and moreover, it adds more risk. Every lane change is a high-risk maneuver. When a driver moves over, waits for someone to merge, and then moves back, that's multiple additional opportunities for something to go wrong.

It's much simpler for drivers in the through lane to just maintain a steady speed and adequate following distance. That gap leaves space for someone to merge in.

What I often see instead is drivers matching my exact speed and trying to merge right next to me, as if it isn't an option to just go slightly ahead of or behind me. Merging is fundamentally about adjusting. They have the yield sign, after all.

I'm not trying to be rude or difficult. I'm trying to be safe and efficient.
