I was a service mgr and service and parts director at 2 dealerships for 24 years....20 at one and 4 at another. We set our own labor rates and parts prices. The dealer (owner) ALWAYS wanted more and more gross profits every month...so the answer was raise the labor rate and use matrix pricing for parts which was list price plus 15%.
So they made money, lots of it, at the expense of the customers...
As the service manager, my pay was a percentage of the monthly profit...so we all made lots of money and just ripped off the customers.

yep.. last time we went to the dealership for a car check it cost us several grand 😒 and they wanted to charge us 4k for a new hybrid battery .. my hub found a place online that instals a refurbished battery for 2k

I had a similar situation where I had been previously charged a similar amount by my car dealer for labor for asking them to fix my battery issues. They half-assed the solution and then it died again a month later. Some guy from AAA was able to eyeball the issue and was able to fix it on the spot for no extra.

I don’t trust the dealer anymore to actually care about fixing the issue.

Things seem to have changed over the years. My dealers over the past 15 years they have been honest, and charge appropropriately.

You may have violated her warranty. John Deere had a clause on their tractors that only dealerships could fix them.

Never go to a stealership for any kind of work, find a local shop. Honda parts have always been hilariously expensive, but a dealership will always charge you an arm, leg, and an ear.

That is a rip-off. Either that or the labour-charges in your area are extraordinarily high anyway.

Say $20 for the arm bought directly. So £280 fitting-charge.

I don't know what would be a fair "call-out charge" or "miniumum order charge" locally to you- let's say $100.

So £180 for 5 minutes gives $2160 an hour overheads rate... the fitter sees only a fraction of that as wages.

Like many motorists I regard items like screen wiper blades as "consumables" you simply buy as common pattern-parts from your local car-parts dealer, and fit yourself.

Actually our main one, a branch of the Halfords chain, does offer a fitting service too, for little extra charge. I had to use it recently to replace a blown headlamp bulb, because although that should be a simple task normally, the bodywork design makes one lamp-holder extremely difficult to reach and I did not to risk damaging anything.

if it were truly theft, you wouldn't have had the agency to decline and buy elsewhere. An exchange of resources becomes theft when the transaction was forced against or without agency.

We just go to auto zone and pick one up and sometimes they will install it for you as a courtesy.

probably because they have to charge a minimum one hour on labor which is the same for any work they do. hopefully they told her she could have it done at the gas station for less or open up YouTube.
