Me and my daughter were changing the thermostat housing

On my car and we accidentally broke a part of the radiator where the hose connects, so we had to get a new radiator, ugh. And it was pouring rain and dark out while we were working

Was it badly rusted? In a way probably lucky since it might have cracked while on the road - then have to get towed and all that - except the rain is no fun to work in...

Oops! I hope you didn't just put a thermostat curse on my old Chevy pickup. I used to have thermostat problems on most vehicles I owned, but I have never had an issue with my 23 year old truck. It will probably die tomorrow.
