Is it nearly $1000 to get CV joint repaired or axle shaft?

My steering wheel began making clicking noise yesterday upon turning. I guess I'm ok for a bit to drive it but soon I need to have a mechanic look at it. I just got a price online that click noises are often a CV joint and that it's $900-$1000 . Is that the average price to get it repaired ??? 😮

Depends on the mechanic shop…Toyota wanted $750 per side to do it on my old Prius, but the nice Vietnamese shop up in north county did both sides for a total of $600.

@Coralmist my first experience did that with an 84 Ford tempo in the early 90s… More of a hard knocking sound whenever I turned left. My more recent experience with the Prius was more of a strange vibration almost like the tires were off balance, but only from 48 to 63 miles an hour. No knocking or clicking sound this time, but when I crawled underneath the car and took a look, I could see the half shafts on both sides were coming loose from the transmission.

@Zaphod42 Toyota dealer charged $700 to keep my car for a week just to say, "well, we think it's the fuel injectors"

$2100 to replace them. We said no thanks to that.

@Zaphod42 600 is better than 750🙂 The clicking has only occured once, two days ago. And yesterday I drove it about 20 minutes, no clicking sound. There was a bolt like knock sound two weeks ago in middle of steering wheel, but nothing since then. I wonder if I can drive it for a while to see if these two sounds become prevalent, or is it concerning even once or twice, and get it looked at soon?

I recommend getting the parts from rockauto.com. just make sure you know if the car parts are Japan and then California emissions, you gotta get the right part, but if you do that then the garage can only charge for the labor and parts are not that expensive.

I've been through this ordeal myself. Mechanic wants 300 to repair headlight, I can go to rockauto, spend 110 on the light and do it myself, just as an example.

I had my rear struts replaced, it was cheaper for me to buy the strut and spring as a kit and have it installed, I'm only paying for the labor, not paying for labor and parts

I just asked my friend and he said for one cv joint about $350. If you need to replace the axle which has 2 cv joints about $1200.

@lostlissa Thank you 🌻

You can look up the price of the parts online, then figure labor and other costs are at least as much as the part. If the parts cost is $400, you can expect to pay at least 800. That said, $900-1000 seems reasonable.

Best solution is to have a friend or family member who enjoys working on cars. You pay for the parts plus the cost of a case of beer and a steak dinner, and it’s all good.

@trollslayer Unfortunately I don't have anyone I know that works on cars😟

You make me so glad I haven't owned a car in over 25 years.
Last time I did a CV it was $150 for the cv shaft. If you want to cheat open the boot up and pack it with grease

That needs immediate repair. You could lose control of your vehicle if it completely fails and they fail suddenly when they do.

Some are more as they my need new seals, I used take my boot off mine and clean and repack with grease and put a Universal boot on it and it last me over another 2 years
A CV joint only makes noise when you are in a curve, and accelerating. If your left CV joint is bad you hear it when steering ánd driving in a curve to the right

@Thewhazzupdude I took a left but heard it while turning on the next bend, to the right.

Nothing to it 108$ from auto shack on Amazon

@Whyme Ty for the quote. I guess mechanic
do raise prices sometimes vs. getting it yourself.
