Early today I had a car problem

So I made a post earlier today about my car not starting. Here's what happened if you didn't catch that first post.

I got up for work, got all my stuff ready, go to my car at about 4:43am. I put my key in the ignition and turned the key to the ON position. I always do this before turning the key to crank the engine over. So when I turned the key to the ON position, all the dash lights came on like normal. I go to crank the engine over and everything just goes black. No sounds, no noises.

So I got home and dad and I took a look at it. He took the positive terminal off the battery and cleaned the cable connection, and cleaned the battery terminal as well. I put the key in and boom, everything came on. He said it was a dirty terminal. You can see a lot of, like when a AAA battery explodes, you could see all that acid stuff all on the terminal and the cable connector. He then did the same with the negative terminal.

Some people in my first post said earth cable. (not sure what that is) did they mean ground? Well it was actually just a dirty connector. I'm so glad it was a simple and easy fix and not something like a starter or alternator.

But before the night is over, I'm going to go out and start it up again, just to make sure it starts up.

You can pour Coke Or really any soda on the cables and it will get rid of the corrosion on the terminals.

I've seen corroded terminals appear as dead batteries on multiple occasions. You learned a life lesson today.

Want another? The vast majority of Check Engine indicators are caused by loose gas caps. Or gas caps that don't seal and allow a vacuum leak.

they make some gunk you can smear on the posts to prevent them corroding like that.

@Ozuye502 Yea we use that stuff at my work actually. We use it to put on the mating side of connectors where the terminals are. But it's red and looks like jelly.

@twiigss that would be the stuff

@twiigss pour boiling water over the gunk / terminals and then use vaseline or grease on the battery terminals and posts.

Regardless of make and model this is a pretty common issue especially when you have an older battery. And an easy fix as well.
That even happens with wheelchairs. One trick is to put grease over the connectors both of them. That'll stop it from corrosion.

Light film of grease on those will prevent that from happening again🙂

@Ozuye502 Well, I think the battery was bought in 2019. So about 3 years old.

@twiigss sounds about right they only have a 3 to 5 year life span

@Ozuye502 The crazy thing for me, is that wednesday night I drove an hour over state lines to a friends place, and then left his place friday night at 10pm. Then monday to work and no issues, then this morning, poof. Guess I was lucky it happened up here and not while I was away.
