Do you think state car inspection is important

I believe 12 states have it. Texas was 13 till last January.

I don’t think it was statistically shown to reduce accidents, and the general public saw it as a nuisance and even an opportunity to fleece car owners.

In my state, when going in for an inspection, the first step was for the inspector to remove the old sticker, thus practically guaranteeing that a failed inspection led to the repair being performed by the same mechanic that did the inspecting.

My state (AZ) only requires emissions testing & that's only for Tucson & Phoenix. I live in Phoenix but before I bought my first car, I had my address legally changed to my grandma's & kept my mailing address in Phoenix. Since my grandma still lives in our small hometown, I don't have to do any testing at all.

It helps a ton since I buy a lot of cars. There's been a few times the MVD has asked me if that's really my address & I just tell them yes I live there but I work out here 🤷

Easy revenue for the state. I've always kept my cars in tip-top shape, because I drive a ton. It just seems risky to not keep up with your vehicle.
Depends on what it entails and how its enforced. Ensuring brakes, tires and other things are in proper shape for safe operation is a good thing, beyond that tends to open up fraud/gouging by shops w lower integrity.

It typically just causes as many problems as it solves, from my understanding.

My state used to have it until the early 80's. Supposedly a lot of places would just "pass" cars without actually testing.

We only have it as a requirement for putting a used car on the road by a new owner. That's actually surprising being a blue state which normally like to suck every penny out of you they can get. However we do have biannual smog test requirements which is a joke.

Either inspect or give tickets for obvious safety issues. One of the first things I notice in "non-inspection" states is the number of headlights that are not working. It makes me wonder if their brakes are any better.
@exexec Pretty much every state hands out fixit tickets for such things.
Farking rort if you ask me..
Sure there’s cars that don’t belong on the road.. but we have to get a safety check every year .. cool $50 to a Mechenic to tick a box

In France it’s much better
You get an offical document with the same tests everywhere and in a centralized computer system
The car CANNOT be repaired by the controlling garage which is exclusively for tests

My state will never get rid of inspections. Just another way to rip us off
somewhat, but every year for a car you just bought is a money grab by the state, the frequency should go by the age of the car. 35 bucks every year where the state gets half, on a 2024 car is pure nonsense
@NativePortlander1970 Massachusetts. We do emissions one year and safety the next, every year regardless of age.
@FreeSpirit1 Ah, Taxachussetts, a state worse than commiefornia.

Yes I do. Cars need to have a minimum level of safety to be on the road. You need to have breaks and decent tires. Your windshield shouldn't be spiderweb. All of your lights should work too. It's a hassle to get the inspection, but we have to drive on the roads with other drivers.

If you don’t to get pulled over it is.

It would be if nobody was too poor to afford keeping their vehicle in line with the more strict guidelines

@MrBrownstone very funny. Now fixed
Yes, there are too many noisy polluting beaters on the road in states that don't have it.
