Last night I changed my gf's engine oil & transmission fluid

She drives a 2017 Nissan Sentra & she's been worried about the transmission lately. I know Nissan (especially her model), has really bad issues with their CVT transmissions & she's already replaced it once a few years ago. Recently her car started having this whirring or whining sound when accelerating & the car would shudder sometimes.

After some research I discovered the CVT transmission fluid in these Sentras is supposed to be "lifetime" but it's really not. I guess it can cause the same issues her car was having if the fluid gets low or gross. Usually it'll wear down the bearings sooner than anything else, which would cause that whirring sound I was hearing.

I decided to check her transmission fluid (which I couldn't even do at home since I lost all my tools) & I checked her engine oil in the process. Her oil was definitely low so I told her we gotta go to my dad's so I could change her oil ASAP.

Luckily since we were at my dad's & he has all kinds of tools & equipment, he pulled out a fluid evacuator so we could suck out all the transmission fluid without having to drop the whole pan 👌 her transmission only had 2 quarts of fluid in it when it's supposed to have 4.5 so it was definitely low. My dad said that's definitely something that could make it act the way it was. We refilled it with some new CVT transmission fluid to it's full amount.

We gotta give it a few days to feel it out but her car definitely got quieter & hasn't shuddered again. The whirring sound is barely there & it's fading. I'm guessing the bearings might be worn a little already but hopefully it'll still last a while longer 🙏

I was telling my dad how I just wanted to work on her car before I go to jail since I obviously can't help once I'm gone. This upcoming weekend is my last free weekend & I'll be busy which is why I wanted to address any & all her car issues ASAP.

Before we left my dad's house for the night though, he told my gf "if you ever need anything, just let me know. Anytime" & I know that was his way of saying that he'll help with her car while I'm gone. He helps all his kids with their cars & I'm the only one who goes to his house to work on my cars myself. I show up to work on my gf's car there too 🤷 so I really appreciate the fact that he's willing to help her out when I'm gone. It helps me worry about that a lot less

I have a 2013 Subaru with a CVT. It's sealed and doesn't have a means to check the fluid level. It requires a fluid evacuator to do a complete fluid change. I bought it in 2019 and haven't touched it. It also uses a chain rather than a belt.

@Gibbon yeah I foolishly thought there'd be a dipstick to check the fluid level but there wasn't. There was a bolt to unscrew on the bottom while the car was running & level, & you should see fluid drain a bit when unscrewed. That's how we were able to look at the fluid color at least & check that it had a bit of fluid at least. We could tell it was low since only a small streamline came out.

That's when my dad pulled out the fluid evacuator 👌

@ChiefJustWalks Yup and it seems most of the CVTs with failure issues use belts instead of chains. I don't like timing belts and I certainly don't want one in a sealed transmission.
CVT belt could of gotten loose or tight. I've never been near a CVT that didn't have some sort of whine.

@Justafantasy I was noticing some kind of light clicking sound as well tonight around the belt area. I wonder..
@ChiefJustWalks most of what I know about CVT's is from when I had a quad, you want the belt to stay dry or it starts to slip. I'm not sure why road going vehicles are now getting transmissions that were used in snowmobiles since the 1970's

Awww I'm glad he offered that open invitation for help.

We're gonna miss you here. 😔
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@Starcrossed I appreciate it because he's never offered that to any of my siblings partners. It seems like my family likes her a lot.

I'll miss you guys too though 🤗 I'll just be writing, reading, & drawing a ton probably.

LAST FREE WEEKEND?! NOOOO
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@foldedunfolding yeah I'm trying to make the best of it 🙏 I'll be going to a truck & a car show on Friday & Saturday, then an engagement party for a cousin Saturday night that way I could see a bunch of family

What's all this about jail, bruh?
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@LordShadowfire yeah that's the way I see it. I could easily get years so I consider myself lucky. I'm grateful

@ChiefJustWalks Just don't kill any of the little junior gladiators that go through County, lol.

@LordShadowfire I don't plan on getting into anything unless my hand is forced. I'ma just be chillin
