Last night I changed my gf's engine oil & transmission fluid
She drives a 2017 Nissan Sentra & she's been worried about the transmission lately. I know Nissan (especially her model), has really bad issues with their CVT transmissions & she's already replaced it once a few years ago. Recently her car started having this whirring or whining sound when accelerating & the car would shudder sometimes.
After some research I discovered the CVT transmission fluid in these Sentras is supposed to be "lifetime" but it's really not. I guess it can cause the same issues her car was having if the fluid gets low or gross. Usually it'll wear down the bearings sooner than anything else, which would cause that whirring sound I was hearing.
I decided to check her transmission fluid (which I couldn't even do at home since I lost all my tools) & I checked her engine oil in the process. Her oil was definitely low so I told her we gotta go to my dad's so I could change her oil ASAP.
Luckily since we were at my dad's & he has all kinds of tools & equipment, he pulled out a fluid evacuator so we could suck out all the transmission fluid without having to drop the whole pan 👌 her transmission only had 2 quarts of fluid in it when it's supposed to have 4.5 so it was definitely low. My dad said that's definitely something that could make it act the way it was. We refilled it with some new CVT transmission fluid to it's full amount.
We gotta give it a few days to feel it out but her car definitely got quieter & hasn't shuddered again. The whirring sound is barely there & it's fading. I'm guessing the bearings might be worn a little already but hopefully it'll still last a while longer 🙏
I was telling my dad how I just wanted to work on her car before I go to jail since I obviously can't help once I'm gone. This upcoming weekend is my last free weekend & I'll be busy which is why I wanted to address any & all her car issues ASAP.
Before we left my dad's house for the night though, he told my gf "if you ever need anything, just let me know. Anytime" & I know that was his way of saying that he'll help with her car while I'm gone. He helps all his kids with their cars & I'm the only one who goes to his house to work on my cars myself. I show up to work on my gf's car there too 🤷 so I really appreciate the fact that he's willing to help her out when I'm gone. It helps me worry about that a lot less
