This is s good time to maybe re-apprise NATO from both the European nations view as well as the US's.

Without NATO in the 40s, 50s and 60s, the Soviet Union's footprint would likely have extended to the English Channel and North Africa. The US and the hundreds of military installations and hundreds of thousands of forces scattered from the Black Sea to across the full length of the Med, through North Africa to beyond Spain and to the North Sea and the North Pole kept the Soviet Union contained on their side of the Iron Curtain. Now since the Soviet Union crumbled, the US presence across Europe and North Africa is probably view by our European friends as more of an infringing nuisance than a benefit. Also as the European economies recovered from the war and were less and less in need of the the cash that the US injected into Europe to support the US forces in Europe, our European friends view all those old US military installations as better suited for housing projects or public airports, and the economic benefits of the US cash used to fund NATO have long since been replaced by lopsided tariffs that favor European economies.

The reasons why NATO existed have progressively gone away. And from its very beginning it was less about the US security than Europe's, so why is the US still paying for it?
