I was raised thinking we had three branches of government of equal power. That was supposed to block us run from what we are going through.

That's the way the government was designed -- the "Founders" had just kicked out a king and didn't want another. Thanks to the current bought-and-paid-for SCOTUS and a GOP of traitors those early beliefs are being ignored/overthrown.
