AITAH - Uncle Passed tragically I spoke to the press

So, my uncle passed away tragically and suddenly. He was really influential in our community and had a lot of friends.

I saw a reporter, who is also an old college friend of mine, asking for information in a FB group about his impact within the community to write a tribute article as he was a longtime educator. I responded to him letting know how great of a person the man he was referring to was and that he was in fact my uncle…the reporter (my friend) said he really just didn’t have a lot of info and would be so grateful if I could help him get some quotes and photos messages from the community for the article.

So I started reaching out to some other well known figures in our community like the principal of his school where he worked, the bike shop where he had lots of friends etc and they were all thrilled to provide quotes to the paper and photos and stuff.

When I asked my aunt about it and said they were working on a tribute live peice, was there anything we could add from our side of the family and I let her know that I tried to connect the paper to the right people so they could write an informed article on how amazing he was…

she was honestly really upset about it and I also got a text from my dad just angry that I could’ve done that to their family.

I was really just trying to honor and remember my uncle. I thought he would’ve wanted it. The article is going to be about really truly about how amazing of a person he was and how much he will be missed, how big of an impact he had on the community. AITA? What do I do? 😭

You are fine.

They are shocked & mad he's dead and a tribute story, like an obit, is a hard wake-up call.

You are getting the best reactions when people have not yet massaged their memories.

Good for you.

@SomeMichGuy thank you so much for this perspective. I think you’re 100% right!
@Brassm0nk3y
😊 Thank you.

Don't beat yourself up over this; be the duck and let their anger just flow around you.

They'll do what they have to do...but I bet they'll love the product.

@SomeMichGuy I really hope so thank you so much for the kind words. ❤ grateful to have everyone’s encouragement, I love this analogy.
@Brassm0nk3y If anything I write helps you, great!

But they have to come around on the article, because it will be a precious momento of his life. They will ultimately treasure it if it's done right.

@SomeMichGuy I think so too, I just can’t understand how they could be so mad. But I’m trying to understand. I think it’ll be lovely with everyone’s quotes in there. Thank you for the encouragement. Grateful for you.
@Brassm0nk3y Again, thanks; and if anything I say helps, I am honored. Take care.
