It was funny but it has serious consequences.

Andrew Tate and Tommy Robinson helped spread the disinformation about the identity of the suspect for the girl who died in the Southport stabbing. They directly contributed to the islamophobic riots in the UK.

Two people were previously banned and reinstated by Trump.

@Burnley123 Was it "disinformation" - ie did those concerned know it was untrue? Or was it just a mistake? I don't know.

@MartinII Oh, they knew it was a lie, because even when the suspect had been arrested, although not named (for legal reasons), the Police quickly revealed that he is a Briton, born in South Wales, albeit of parents from a Christian-majority African country.

It was also clear we do not know any motive - that will emerge, we hope, in Court.

The News yesterday reported the Pakistan police are questioning a man there for helping spread this "disinformation".

They think they are beyond reach by hiding behind nick-names on "social"-media (social??) but no, they can be identified.

No, surely rumours started to circulate and be reported before the police had said anything about the person arrested. But I have no idea what the source was.

@ArishMell In one sense of course it's irrelevant, because even if the rumour had been true there would have been no justification for the riots. But it fuels the government's enthusiasm for legislating against "disinformation" on social media - which often simply means opinions they disagree with.
