I feel like we're throwing that word around in such a way that it's lost all meaning.
@LordShadowfire I have no idea the meaning, or meanings... what are we talking about?
GlitterEater · 36-40, F
@LordShadowfire Which countries have you heard that applied to?
LordShadowfire · 100+, M
@GlitterEater Israel, China, Japan, South Korea, etc.

@LordShadowfire I've never heard South Korea or China called an ethno-state. In what context have you heard China and South Korea called ethno-states? I'm not even sure I've heard Japan referred to that way, but I would at least know what was meant by it.

@GlitterEater China is full of Chinese people. South Korea is full of South Korean people. Japan is full of Japanese people.

These are the ancestral lands of specific ethnic groups.

@LordShadowfire Okay, well if people are calling countries ethno-states based solely on there being a ethnic majority, then I guess you're right, there isn't an agreed meaning of the word.

Bee tea dubs, Chinese isn't a specific ethnicity. The Han people are the largest Chinese ethnic group.

@GlitterEater I freely admit I don't know a lot about the Chinese people. I knew there were different languages within their borders, but not different ethnic groups.

@LordShadowfire I'm no expert in Chinese culture either. I don't know why I know this but the majority of Chinese people, like 90%, are Han, and there are like 50 other ethnic groups which are all pretty small compared to the total population (like about 1% or less each).
