My first internet connection at home was a WebTV. It was easy to maneuver, no risk of getting viruses, and I could use it as many hours as I wanted each month without having any overcharges. One of the neat features was chat rooms on a variety of topics and some just social chat rooms. They also had many topics of message boards that were interesting and fun to use. Having conversations with so many others at the same time was kind of fun at times.

I met my now x wife on yahoo.
I made friends via yahoo, and when it went down, I lost touch with a lot of people.

Oh yess
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Yes! AOL and Yahoo had chat rooms and groups full of lively chit chat about anything and everything under the sun. Before that, there was CompuServe and local bulletin boards. Since they were mostly modem connections it was mostly all text.
I think most of it was destroyed by spam and advertisement, and it looks like spam is going to destroy e-mail. All the important e-mail I receive is now buried in a mountain of junk mail.

I remember Yahoo Group chat rooms. They were great until spam destroyed them. Also AOL chat rooms were a big success.
I belonged to a few on various topics. I remember the ones on the computer programs like Windows and the various Office products. Those chat groups were great for getting instant advice. Even big shots from Microsoft and Apple participated.
