People can be cruel, however, as you age, you will realize it doesn't matter what others think. What matters is that you are living your life for you and to be happy for you, not for the sake of approval of others. You can do this. :) Everyone is beautiful.

I have been told that many people just care less about their appearance as they get older. Maybe it is to do with maturity or being in relationships. I personally take better care of myself now that I am older but I wear makeup a lot less often.
OWise1 · F
Maybe it is that they get content in their relationships and lose some aspect of themselves as a result
LadyWioness · 56-60, F
A lot of reasons, which many have stated already. However, I am 51, and people say I look 35. I think that what's in the heart is most important.
LadyWioness · 56-60, F
@juiceyangel333: sometimes, Juice, we have to. Beating ourselves down for past mistakes serves no purpose. Life is a journey of learning.
juiceyangel333 · 31-35, F
@ZenLioness: yea you've inspired me . Hopefully I can be rich and happy soon
LadyWioness · 56-60, F
@juiceyangel333: I hope so Juice. Hang in there girl!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Could be a medical issue such as a hormone imbalance or depression (which might be linked to low levels of neurotransmitters such as GABA) which is probably a lot more common than any of us realize. People shouldn't be so quick to make snap judgements.

@OWise1: I have fibro. I try to go walk every day
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@OWise1: There are nutritional ways to heal many of those health issues if a person were to research it. I never heard of fibromyalgia when I was younger and now it seems to be common, I believe that the standard American diet may very well be the root cause of it.
OWise1 · F
@cherokeepatti: In part nutrition plays a role in all diseases as cells must be healthy for things to work. However, research is showing that fibromyalgia may have a neurological base combined with some genetic and environmental as well as hormonal contributors to the condition.

At age 66 one's range of motion is limited and 24/7 pain is a key factor .
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Older people, especially if they live by themselves, may have hair that is matted because they can't reach that high. I worked with a woman who visited her neighbor who was in her late 90's, widowed and no children...her hair was matted when she first friended her...the lady would go over once a week and take wash her hair and talk to her and things like that. Said the lady couldn't reach up to brush her hair at all, much less wash it.
OWise1 · F
You make such an excellent point Paschar and Cherokeepatti...with age comes mobility issues that may prevent the maintenance of one's self. Thanks so much for honing in on this overlooked aspect.

Work, stress etc
OWise1 · F
Stress does play a huge role in how we perceive and react to ourselves, indeed.

As people get old they are no longer able to work out and keep their bodies in shape. I used to run every day and loved it. It got to the point I just couldn't do it anymore. It was to painful. I am a very clean person take several showers a day so I think their is no excuse for being dirty and stinky. And if you watch what you eat their is no excuse for being gross and fat. However their are people who suffer from things like diabetes and other not so fun diseases that can't do any thing about it. So I would say the whole being in shape and having the perfect body is a young person s thing. When you get old it no longer matters at all. You realize what is really important.
OWise1 · F
I see the validity in what you are saying. However, I think good health is important regardless of age and we all should be aware of moderation to avoid potential health problems.

@OWise1: absolutely! I agree .... may I also say I think people as they get older realize more truths! about life. Do you understand what I mean? The more truth you learn the more depressed it makes you. I sometimes think this may be the cause of death for some people. When you wake up one day a realize the total truth about the world we live in.
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
It might be a "why bother?" response to their perceived deterioration in looks, and/or it might be that they lack the energy to put extra effort into their appearance. 🤔
OWise1 · F
So many factors to be able to pinpoint one reason so it seems. Nonetheless, there is no dispute that regardless of appearance, if we are doing the best that we can with what we have got, then that in part is what seems to count. :)
If it's minor stuff, it's wisdom. If it's major stuff, it's pain and / or dementia.
OWise1 · F
Point taken :)

I think its many things. Depression could be one reason, not giving a shit another. The ones that interest me are the ones that still look good. They have a decent body, decent face, but the women don't wear even a little make-up any more, don't get their hair styled and the men wear pony-tails and sweats. I think those people have realized that life isn't all about appearances. They are too busy living a full life to worry about what they look like and what other people think.
OWise1 · F
I think too it's about feeling healthy and making a conscious effort to be healthy.
SW-User
Perhaps old people think they don't need attention of anyone anymore
OWise1 · F
@Popobandar: Perhaps...routine may get old indeed.
SW-User
No other clue If I would have my grandparents lived I would ask them but sadly they died
OWise1 · F
@Popobandar: I'm so sorry.
Freefun74 · 51-55, M
I haven't. I work harder the older I get!
OWise1 · F
It also takes more work as we age, but I think it's well worth it. :)
juiceyangel333 · 31-35, F
Yes major depression
OWise1 · F
Depression can impact all aspects of one's life, indeed.
cycleman · 61-69, M
They are so use to the shit they receive from others day after day and basically have reached the stage of not giving a shit anymore. They are hurting big time and this is their way of showing it.
OWise1 · F
I can see where that might happen.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
