Why do people sometimes as they age tend to not take good care of themselves?

It seems many people give up on their personal appearance as they age. But why? Do you think it's due to not feeling well, depression, or what?

At age 66 one's range of motion is limited and 24/7 pain is a key factor .

Older people, especially if they live by themselves, may have hair that is matted because they can't reach that high. I worked with a woman who visited her neighbor who was in her late 90's, widowed and no children...her hair was matted when she first friended her...the lady would go over once a week and take wash her hair and talk to her and things like that. Said the lady couldn't reach up to brush her hair at all, much less wash it.

You make such an excellent point Paschar and Cherokeepatti...with age comes mobility issues that may prevent the maintenance of one's self. Thanks so much for honing in on this overlooked aspect.
