What would you do if you went to a store and someone was asked to leave or speak in English ?

Once I went to a store and a customer was asked to speak in English or go back to where they came from

it kind of depends where this happened, if it was in Canada and the person was speaking french it would be wrong because we have two official languages but as a traveler I consider it basic courtesy to at least try to speak the local language, until the local person speaks to you in your language. I've seen many times in spanish countries americans speaking directly to people in english as if its their responsibility to understand them and I find that rude. the correct way is to try your best, using a dictionary or google translate, until, if you're lucky, the local takes pithy on you and starts talking english with you.

how ignorant of that staff member maybe it was a case of this customer had poor use of the english language. if you work in a store you do not need ignorant racists working for you but those customer friendly staff [mysteryespresso]
Someone here on comments claims that it’s rude if you don’t learn local language @smiler2012

Okay, I'm about as politically conservative as someone can be. But I would avoid going back to that store or place of business, and I would let the owner(s) know why.

We are a nation of immigrants. Like so many Americans, I've had family members who came here without a functioning command of the English language. Most of us have. We need to be a welcoming culture.

Finally, I ran my own business, and I would not have been successful if I wasn't willing to accommodate the needs of my customers/clients. If employees don't care about some customers. they very likely don't care about the rest of us.

My opinion, anyway.

Honestly if I witnessed that I would leave and never shop there again.
@Starcrossed you don’t agree with @reflectingmonkey that one must try to learn local language?

@mysteryespresso I absolutely agree one should learn the local language but while they're still learning you shouldn't treat someone like that. This world is far too short on patience, empathy and compassion.

My son went to Austria and went to a restaurant where the waitress insisted he place his order in German. The waitress took his order then in perfect English said "See not that hard was it".

That happened to me in Turkey.
@SweetMae you could not speak local language?
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@mysteryespresso Not when I first arrived.
I would call them out for being so rude. Such a mean spirited person.

I mean it's not as bad considering the customer doesn't understand a word anyways
