How much time do you set aside for writing each day?
I hear people say writing daily is best, but how much do people write everyday? I’m trying to get at least 1 hour a day in, with no current precise writing quota, but I don’t know where that stacks with others. Nor what I should be aiming for. Do you ever just need a day off of life itself to do absolutely nothing? What's your personal "nothing" to do? Today my nothing is Reddit, Facebook, and Tubi. Busted my back working yesterday. Just need to veg today. How often do you take a day completely off in which you just do things for yourself? How do you save your day knowing that half of the day is already wasted?
Today I woke up late, really late (12 noon), a surge of anxiety and regret filled my mind that drained 90 percent of the motivation I had. And other 10 percent is gone by the fact that you don't feel exuberant when you wake up late. Still, after all this I just couldn't save rest of the day no matter how hard I try. Is their any way out of this? Do you try to take each day as it comes? How much time do you commit to writing every day? And how much of that time is actually committed to writing? I'm still trying to find what works best, but I'm curious: do you have a specific time when you write most days or do you just go for it whenever? Personally, I find it all too easy to keep saying I'll write later until I run iut of time in the day, but I'm interested in other opinions/experiences. On average, how much time each day do you spend writing? How much time do you set aside to read before writing again?
This should also include other storytelling mediums such as video games, film, comics, etc. Over the past month, I've realized I haven't read nearly as much as I should have. So I've taken the time to devour media, mainly books. I've also put writing on the wayside for this, as it is difficult for me to read and write at the same time. For those in the same boat, how long have you taken to reading/consuming media before writing again? Also, for someone who is interested in horror and fantasy, what would be your required readings/playing/watching? When I read in Stephen King's memoir On Writing that he writes for six hours a day it made me question if I'm taking my craft seriously enough. But yet at the same time he did say that I have I am free to choose how many hours per day (because King lives off his books). I usually tend to write for two hours a day but there are many times that I do slack at that also (because I get bored at times) yet I really want to get better and I know the best way to do that is through practice practice practice. But for me I don't know. Perhaps I should write more per day or perhaps I shouldn't. Its all according to if I have the time, if it makes me money, or if I feel like it N/A.
How many words do you write everyday, and do you have any tips for increasing daily word count?
Currently I write a minimum of 3,000 words a day, but I would like to be closer to 5,000. Usually when I get around 3,500 words it feels like I walked into quicksand and my progress slows considerably. I still feel fresh the words just stop flowing as easily. Any tips for pushing past this hurdle? Is writing everyday really necessary?
I used to write just about everyday in high school, but nowadays I’m working full-time on top of going for a degree. Basically, I’m exhausted four days out of the week.
On building the habit to write every day, when's the best time for you?
I haven’t written much since HS and I want to brush up my skills again. I know the prevailing advice is to write DAILY, but that’s just not practical for me. Anyone else in the same place? Any advice? I have recently picked up some ghostwriting gigs. I am juggling four clients currently. I also have a full-time job that I do in addition to this. I am struggling with coming up with a realistic goal for myself on how much to write everyday-especially since I am working on four projects for clients and one of my own personal novels. I think right now I'm hovering between 1500-2000 a day between all the projects, but I'm not sure if that's fully sustainable. It's about an extra two hours a day of work.
What goal do you have for your word count a day? How often do you actually achieve that goal?
So here comes the actual question. How often do you write? How do you time it out? Do you take days off? Do you reduce the hours at certain times or is it mostly because of restrictions? I've been trying to be a better human in the past couple months. This involves a consistent sleep schedule prioritizing 8 hours of sleep, a routine workout regimen, a 40-hour work week, volunteering once a week (although I've recently cut this down), and maintaining social and family obligations all the while throughout the week and weekends.
I don't really have time for any hobbies anymore: playing video games, Netflix binging, and even my more erudite hobbies like learning Spanish, reading, and playing chess are off the table. I usually watch about an 45 minutes of TV every night but I'm not willing to give that up yet.
I'm thinking about setting aside an entire weekend once a month to write. I know lots of writers recommend writing everyday but considering my schedule, this seems impractical. Plus, everytime I try that method I end up writing something I completely hate. (I know this is common among writers but I just much rather write a small amount of things I'm proud of than a bunch of things I'm not.) Does this sound like a sufficient plan? And does anyone else have difficulty finding time to write?
