Do you think I.Q. tests are an accurate measure of intelligence? Do you consider yourself "intelligent" ?

SW-User Best Comment
"People who boast about their IQ are losers." - Stephen Hawking.

It isn't an accurate measure in the slightest. Well, there is proof that IQ correlates with success in the work force, but to me, that is not a measure of intelligence.

IQ tests do not measure the totality of intelligence. The human mind is far too complicated and plastistic to be measured by a test of puzzles and anagrams.

The IQ test is eugenics based; it was a part of the eugenics program and is essentially a tool used to weed out undesirables. That is the true source of the test.

Let me give you an example to illustrate the fact that the test is faulty: Richard Feynman was considered to be a genius and one of the smartest scientists on the earth and he tested at 124, which is nowhere near genius, but only slightly above average.

Charles Manson's score was a 121 - not too much lower than Richard Feynman's.

I don't think there's much more to be said.
@SW-User So many contributed "BC" I appreciate them all. This one pretty much says it all. Thanks.

@Grateful4you As an addendum, my cousin has an IQ over 160 and she is a set designer for a living. And of course, she is someone who has bragged about her IQ. Certainly not putting that IQ to use and not reflecting it in her life. Most of the people who brag about their IQ are like this, so it is usually virtually meaningless.

Another thing I have noticed is that people with really high IQs, I mean like, 180 and higher are like human calculators but I rarely see them display any ingenuity.
@SW-User Being somewhat dull normal myself, if I need inspiration for creativity I steal from Beethovens 9th as kind of a booster shot.

Personally I do not.
Everyone's brain works differently.
IQ tests show those that have more knowledge over a wider range of subjects rate a higher number.
I am intelligent enough to manage to get through life with not too many kicks in the guts.
I refuse to take an IQ Test and be judge by the number generated.
@Grateful4you ooooh!

Truly ....That's such a good compliment.

And its what the world needs .

We need new solitions to old problems, new ways of using what we know.

Facts and resources are limited to our current state , but creativity isn't.

And I don't think there is room in an IQ test, to test this very essential trait.

And I'm not surprised you exceed the box 🤣
@OogieBoogie What a nice thing to say especially considering I failed everything from grammar school through High School. I refused to pay attention and lived life vicariously through books. Everything changed when I decided to get serious and got through college.
@Gusman I've played witj some that pop up online .

But they are a fraction of an official IQ test .

Some I waded thru, some I skipped thru waaay too easy.

I think the only way IQ tesrs could be even remotely useful is finding scholarly strengths.

Even in my test , I skipped whole questions when I assessed within myself, the time I'd spend answering them, would be more negating time wise, to my result .

They are fallible.

I think intelligence lies in you accepting that you don't know it all because then everything you experience is a lesson you're willing to receive
@NickiHijab I agree.

IQ is a calculated value of a person’s mind. It concentrates on study.

Intelligence is a broader term and has several factors attached to it. It determines overall personality of a person.

They are very different.

Do I consider myself intelligent ?

Yes , only in the areas that I am familiar with and have broader knowledge and expertise in.

On a much broader level, no.
Axelerator · 26-30, M
No it is'nt, but it is an accurate measure of your ability of doing IQ tests and similar things. I do yes, and though i've always scored good on the tests, i never believed it was the only indicator. A shepard born in the steppes of the far east, who's never known a book or test in his life, can also be intelligent.
Pfft...people study up on how to perform in an IQ test.

Plus...so many online ones are incredibly fake, made only to pander to people to make them think they are 'oh so smart'.

Even real IQ tests only cover a faction of types of intelligence .

IQ results are intellectuals equivalent of arm wrestling .

Its mostly show 😁
Madmonk · M
@OogieBoogie I know I’m smarter than the average person. There is just no way to quantify my intelligence. Or most people for that matter.
@Madmonk I just feel that there is so much to know, that its never enough.

And intelligence is only quantitative to its usability.

I mean , the best mathematician is useless in the middle of the desert 😂
Madmonk · M
@OogieBoogie absolutely !!
SW-User
Nope. The smartest thing I've ever known is that there's always something to learn.
@SW-User And some of the things are learned from folks you would least expect.
I don't think intelligence can be represented by a single measurement, or even two. So no, single valued IQ is a flawed concept and cannot accurately measure the multiple forms of intelligence.

Do I consider myself intelligent? In some forms of intelligence yes, in other forms I'm undoubtedly well below average.
@ElwoodBlues Very well said. Thanks.
No. Intelligence is about how fast someone can learn and deploy knowledge they come across

The majority of the I.Q. tests are not generic things about rapid learning, but rather general academic concepts. School taught math for example
@Babylon IQ tests do cover memory skills: audio , visual, text and puzzles etc.
But it's just regurgitation of information.

Some of it is problem solving questions...but even then , one must solve the problem to their specified result .

I kinda think in this modern age, IQ tests need to be made differently.

The world has changed, information is used in a different way now.
Knowledge manipulation skills have expanded beyond what they once were.

IQ tests are a narrow assessments…they must be used in concert with other tests to get a true picture of the person.
People are more than a test number …some are capable of things outside the scope of the test.

I don’t buy into learning styles etc
Madmonk · M
Iq tests are bs.
@Madmonk Have you ever taken one?
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
the are the best measure we have especially for diagnosing intellectual disabilities. Yes I think i got the brains in the family.
@DoubleRings Having worked with "DD" I understand this perspective.
eMortal · M
The IQ test is mostly about how cultured you are.
@eMortal I would like to see this perspective argued. Would be interesting. I have learned some thoughtful things from the proverbial, "Crazy lady on the bus"
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
Yes but not because I have a high IQ. I find the tests too narrow.
fun4us2b · M
My IQ is about 185....no wait...that’s my blood pressure 🤣
@fun4us2b LMAO...thanks.😜

It just measures one form of intelligence. A lot of successful people who would very low on those IQ tests.
Iwillwait · M
I'm not smart and stuff.
@Iwillwait A truly inspired comment. I'm impressed with your flair for language.
