Why I avoid politics

I'm the type of guy who holds viewpoints across the political spectrum--and believe me, spectrum is a good word to use here--but I like to mostly stay out of discussions.

This is because very, very few can simply discuss ideas without vitriolically emotional responses. These responses often end in ad hominem attacks and that's where I get off.

Why is that so prevalent? One could ascribe it to a simple matter of immaturity or a lack of having read Dale Carnegie, but to me, there's something else: social narcissism. This is a concept that I feel can explain a lot. Think of your garden variety narc: They live in a black and white world: they're right, you're wrong, and it's their way or the highway, no exceptions. Attack their unassailable political hero? Those heroes are analogous to them because they voted for them, and narcs don't make mistakes. I'm sure quite a few other aspects of narcissism can be plugged right in, including lack of self awareness, empathy, etc.

Wasn't anyone on the debate team in school? Most of this wouldn't fly.

We could probably talk all day and end up choking on a bunch of ill behaviors regarding politics: pseudo-intellectualism, talking points imported from skewed cable news channels, using statistics out of context, etc.

Personally, I'm not afraid of ideas; I'll hear anyone out who isn't a sanctimonious or proselytizing jerk. Can you believe that I may NOT have chosen perfectly in every election in which I have participated? HORRORS!!

Ultimately, I'd rather just celebrate what makes us the same instead of different. Really, I'd rather not tear down someone you like, either, because I value friends, much, much more than politicians.

Anyone feeling that?

{@uncalledfor] that is why have stopped getting involved in political questions and diaslogue for exactly the same reason . politics is a hot topic on similar worlds and as you rightly say opinions ego take over . some cannot see the is two sides to every story and find it necessary to start insults and name calling . very mature for supposely grown adults and i hold my hand up in shame i have been riled and done that precise thing

@smiler2012 For a while there I decided that I'd play them at their own game - they just hurl insults, I'll do the same.. but while I am not adverse to responding like for like, most of the time I just can't be bothered
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Adaydreambeliever Ultimately, their give-a-shit factor is much, much higher than mine.

Yes, many of us can identify with that sentiment. We've all been there... some of us have retaliated, got bored of retaliating etc.

I still comment sometimes on political posts but I don't bother getting embroiled in pointless arguments over it - I just don't have time and have learned it's futile.

I do take your point about concentrating on the similarities, but cynically would say that I suspect that the same thinking that lies behind some political views also pervades into other aspects of their lives.. so, even if we try to concentrate on positives, the negatives still invade inevitably?

@Adaydreambeliever Negative vibes appear to have dominance over positive ones, at least part of the time. I guess there's no allure.

i had to google a few words pfft ..
That took extra minutes out of my precious carrot preparation time
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@SW-User The irony is on me, then, for invoking some of those words.
I have felt for some time now that social media and the 24 hour news cycle have destroyed our ability to have a rational conversation. Most people gravitate towards a news channel that generally agrees with their personal philosophy so most conservatives watch Fox and most liberals watch either CNN of MSNBC depending on how far left they are in their personal beliefs. Social media has created a platform for people who probably would never say many of the things they say if they had to do it in a face-to-face setting because it would likely get them a broken jaw...but i could be wrong.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@istillhaveanameitsrick I largely agree.
@uncalled4 With that being said, i never discuss politics online anymore. I used to do so fairly often and it always lead to anger and/or depression. I have simply come to the realization that my opinions really don't matter so i keep them to myself.
I find that very insulting ... and believe you meant it to be
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@questionWeaver I never said anything of the sort.
@uncalled4 that is how it came across
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@questionWeaver To you. Everyone else read the first sentence and seemed to get it, based on their subsequent comments. If you misinterpreted my statements, there's not much I can do about it.
Political ignorance is why we have lifers like joe biden and nancy pelosi elected to office for 60 years.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@SmileOnYourBrother I appreciate your position but don't wish to discuss this, especially on a thread where I'm talking about not doing so.
@uncalled4 I understand. People are uncomfortable participating in discussions on topics they know nothing about.
