There's an old poem called "The Fool's Prayer" where the author talks about this sort of thing.
"These hard well-meaning hands we thrust amid the heart-strings of a friend, these feet still in the mire go crushing blossoms without end...Lord, be merciful to me, a fool."
I think I would be hurt, too - but if you call him often and he doesn't usually say such things, I'd give him a pass, maybe change it up by calling my mother a little more and him a little less. I would at least ask him before I allowed it to damage our relationship.
And some people just don't like to talk on the phone, even to those they love.
