Is Atheism is a religion?

Discuss.

@Burnley123
Science is a belief system

Science is a set of methods (a methodology). Those methods allow us to ask questions of the natural universe and to know how much confidence we can have in the answers.

Belief not required

Is Atheism is a religion?

In fact, 'atheism' is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a 'non-astrologer' or a 'non-alchemist'. We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs.

It’s a firm belief system

1. there's no proof that gods exist
2. there's no proof that gods don't exist
3. in any event, there’s no compelling necessity to even postulate gods, and the postulation explains nothing (not even itself)... it merely tries to explain everything away.
4. therefore, I have no gods (I’m an agnostic atheist)

Can you identify a ‘belief system’ in there?

Well, obviously the retirement plan is a lot better for Christians, but Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship. Religion is the ugly mask that man puts on spirituality. Religion is man reaching out to God, and Christianity is God reaching out to man.

@Oberon1

Thank you.

@Thinkerbell You're welcome! It's good to see you.

If I am an atheist, I have no belief to defend
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@Oberon1 it’s quite simple.

You do not believe in the invisible unicorn. Therefore, you are a non-believer.

Just as I cannot prove that your god doesn’t exist, you cannot prove the unicorn doesn’t exist.

Your inability to convince me of the existence of your god does not define who I am. I am defined by the things I do and the people I love.

I believe in the goodness of man while knowing that some people wallow in darkness.

You feel compelled to label me within the context of your worldview. I can’t stop you from doing that. But your opinion of me is frankly none of my business.
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@JoeyFoxx Wow. You are dying for someone to disagree with you, aren't you?
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@Oberon1 am I?
BlueVeins · 22-25
Atheists can do it easily as long as we either don't make the mistake of letting religious idiots give us the burden of proof OR write the definitions in our favor. Otherwise, it's a draw.

In another post. I was referred to as a “self proclaimed Atheist” which I consider to be a strange title.
If I don’t believe in a god, it’s because I don’t see a reason to. I can give reasons as to why I’m not convinced. But I don’t see god as a default position for questions I can’t answer .
Atheism has the upper hand, because a religious belief can be proven to be false, or so unlikely that it can’t be true. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I love the creepy Warhammer 40K Avi.

Long live the god-emperor!

Atheism is a religion. Care to rephrase that?
The question is problematic in that an atheist doesn't believe. One can not defend what one does not have.
MegzyMax04 · 18-21, F
@onrealityofdreams they have belief that god does not exist.
They are free to defend what they believe in
@MegzyMax04 Atheism is the absence of belief. An atheist may believe in the good will of people and may have faith that someone may succeed in business or a sport.
MegzyMax04 · 18-21, F
@onrealityofdreams it’s not the absence of belief, it’s a firm belief that there are no gods
Adstar · 56-60, M
My beliefs are defended.. Proof of the pudding is in the eating.. Nothing atheist have said to me over the years has undermined by confidence in God..
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
Neither. They follow different paths until they meet eachother in the same path or just a dead end to eachother.
MegzyMax04 · 18-21, F
From those two? Atheism.
But of all? Agnosticism does.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@MegzyMax04 not a cop out at all.

Lol
MegzyMax04 · 18-21, F
@JoeyFoxx um, no..?
Care to elaborate
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@MegzyMax04 never mind. It was a bad joke.

I can defend my choice, if challenged, but I respect those who respectfully choose to believe.
natureboy3 · 18-21, M
If I was properly religious I'd probably be able to defend my beliefs, same as if I was an atheist
gdon39 · 41-45, M
You couldn’t possibly be one of both could you!! I don’t think so and neither would have the upper hand?
Any person, for whatever reason, who cannot say the words “I have a belief in a god” is an atheist.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
They are just that--beliefs, and I don't have to justify my beliefs to anyone, especially this place.
