"I served in Afghanistan as a US Marine, twice. Here’s the truth in two sentences"

Lucas Kunce, August 23, 2021, Kansas City Star

What we are seeing in Afghanistan right now shouldn’t shock you. It only seems that way because our institutions are steeped in systematic dishonesty. It doesn’t require a dissertation to explain what you’re seeing. Just two sentences.

One: For 20 years, politicians, elites and D.C. military leaders lied to us about Afghanistan.

Two: What happened last week was inevitable, and anyone saying differently is still lying to you.

I know because I was there. Twice. On special operations task forces. I learned Pashto as a U.S. Marine captain and spoke to everyone I could there: everyday people, elites, allies and yes, even the Taliban.

The truth is that the Afghan National Security Forces was a jobs program for Afghans, propped up by U.S. taxpayer dollars — a military jobs program populated by nonmilitary people or “paper” forces (that didn’t really exist) and a bevy of elites grabbing what they could when they could.

You probably didn’t know that. That’s the point.

And it wasn’t just in Afghanistan. They also lied about Iraq.

I led a team of Marines training Iraqi security forces to defend their country. When I arrived I received a “stoplight” chart on their supposed capabilities in dozens of missions and responsibilities. Green meant they were good. Yellow was needed improvement; red said they couldn’t do it at all.

I was delighted to see how far along they were on paper — until I actually began working with them. I attempted to adjust the charts to reflect reality and was quickly shut down. The ratings could not go down. That was the deal. It was the kind of lie that kept the war going.

So when people ask me if we made the right call getting out of Afghanistan in 2021, I answer truthfully: Absolutely not. The right call was getting out in 2002. 2003. Every year we didn’t get out was another year the Taliban used to refine their skills and tactics against us — the best fighting force in the world. After two decades, $2 trillion and nearly 2,500 American lives lost, 2021 was way too late to make the right call.

You’d think when it all came crumbling down around them, they’d accept the truth. Think again.

War-hungry hawks are suggesting our soldiers weren’t in harm’s way. Well, when I was there, two incredible Marines in my unit were killed.

Elitist hacks are even blaming the American people for what happened this week. The same American people that they spent years lying to about Afghanistan. Are you kidding me?

We deserve better. Instead of politicians spending $6.4 trillion to “nation build” in the Middle East, we should start nation building right here at home. I can’t believe that would be a controversial proposal, but already in Washington, we see some of the same architects of these Middle Eastern disasters balking at the idea of investing a fraction of that amount to build up our own country.

The lies about Afghanistan matter not just because of the money spent or the lives lost, but because they are representative of a systematic dishonesty that is destroying our country from the inside out.

FWIW ...

The Kansas City Star is a Kansas City Missouri left wing rag that's in Chapter 11 and that has sunk so fast and hard over the past few years that it's no longer even printed in Kansas City.

As the Star tries to sell off its Kansas City assets to satisfy its debt, it's being printed in Des Moines, Iowa and trucked to Kansas City. A family joke is that they have so few remaining subscribers that they could probably truck it in the trunk of a compact car.

Lucas Kunce is a Democrat contender for the US Senate. His one sentence soundbite is

"Let's change who has power in our country!"

I couldn't agree with that more. The people who have power are Joe Biden and his pals in the House and Senate. We don't want any more of them.

@Heartlander it’s great that you being such a balanced and informed perspective to these posts.
@JoeyFoxx

Thanks Joey!

No wonder Biden decided to completely screw this up by closing the airbase before citizens were out and safe. No wonder he decided to leave all the equipment for the Taliban. No wonder he never even thought about civilians. It's all making sense. This is a democrat who is selling a liberal wish list under the name infrastructure.
Budwick · 70-79, M
OK - none of that justifies abandoning US citizens in that hell hole.
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@SW-User I rated you up even though I'm a bit more hawkish and believe we should get medieval with terrorists. I mean wholesale brutal slaughter! No prisoners, and all that. However your response is sensible and very well articulated, and I respect your perspective.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@Oberon1 I agree Oberon. Fighting armies with uniforms etc went out with WWII. Villagers, children, animals - are all potential targets with the enemies we fight these days.
SW-User
@Oberon1 I am not against taking out targets....and I think the idea that a soldier cannot fire on an enemy combatant.....unless fired on first is pure stupidity on the part of the Pentagon and the military. That bit of stupidity goes back to Vietnam. What else goes back that far is the introduction to cameras on the battlefield. Phones....whatever. If something can be used to take a pic or vid of you killing the person who wants to kill you....the public goes OMG seeing that on the 5 o-clock news. Cameras are a way to prosecute the soldier for doing what he is trained to do. When that became the new thing..soldiers stopped being soldiers. That's ignorant. Some things don't need to be seen on TV. War is one of them. What ended the U.S. from ever winning a war again........is news coverage that exposes the average person sitting at home to what war is.

Thank you for posting and thank you for your service!
JoeyFoxx · 56-60, M
I approve of this message.

I bet a lot of neo-conservatives will be shocked to realize this guy is a Democrat.
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
Now there is a real democrat. They are out there. That is why I keep saying that many in Washington have simply hijacked the title
democrat
and are not democrats at all.
SW-User
@Oberon1 You are a total asshat. My guess is the closest you have ever gotten to actual battle is fighting over who took the last beer out of ur fridge...your wife or your kids. To those of us who were there.............NOTHING said above in that quote was untrue. War is about lying to America to justify ever increasing sizes of military budgets.........that end up in the bank accounts of everyone up and down the chain that can get a hand in the kitty............while poor people's kids die for nothing. Look at Iraq...Afghanistan...Vietnam. NONE were undertaken with the idea of "winning". ALL were drug out for YEARS too long.....to solve nothing. And if it was said outloud "let's end this"............who objected? Republicans. Why? Because Most of the money grabbing is done by high profile politicians and donors..........who thrive on war. Cheney's Haliburton.........DeVos's brother ran all black ops in Afghanistan and Iraq. The list is endless. You are clueless....and you are not afraid to show it. Bummer for you.
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@SW-User and you apparently haven't an iota of reading comprehension, nor the slightest knowledge about me.
Very true words. Sadly it will continue, there are other Iraq's and Afghanistan's on the horizon and the cycle repeats..
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@Majorlatency The American people have to tell Congress, "I'm already against the next war."
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@Majorlatency China, Russia, NK, Iran, and all their dingleberries will be a whole new ballgame. It will be unlike any war or police action this country has ever been involved in. Especially in this new age of self loathing, encouraged effeminacy, and hyper- sensitivity.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
As someone who also served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, there is a lot of truth to what he says and respect to him for having the guts to come out and say it too. It was never going to end well no matter who was in power, at least one finally had the guts to get our Military out of there, good or bad, mostly bad. He would make a good Senator if elected.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@spjennifer And screw those 10,000 American citizens and tens of thousands of American supporting Afghani's, right?

I totally agree with him. We went in to avenge 9-11. We started ok, CIA and military did a great job. But George Bush wanted another war to avenge Saddam going after his family in Kuwait. Took allot of the assets to fight the second war. Took our eye off the prize. If we had concentrated on Afghanistan, it might have been different. Every President after screwed up. And Bidden was a total screw up. Its on him the way it ended. Trump was insane, would have been the same. Never thought we would go though another Vietnam ending, but we did.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Heartlander You need to understand something, soldiers serve the Constitution, we obey rules and the UCMJ and obey orders from our Commander in Chief and the JCS, it is not our place to make the news, we serve so that others may live in peace and freedom, period. Lucas Kunce made a choice after he left the Military, not while he was serving as that would have been inappropriate, so your comments are baseless. If he's now using it to fuel his political ambitions then the voters will deal with that by voting against him. I wouldn't expect any soldier to be a "whistleblower" unless they are very certain of their claims as the consequences would be most severe if their claims were found to be false.
@spjennifer

I was a USAF Major (I think I still am, but I don't think they recall 80 year old reservist :) )

I spent 9 years in active and reserve service, served as a flight instructor, a chief of command post, and as an in-country advisor to the South Vietnamese Air Force.

I am well aware of the UCMJ and how the system works.

I don't ever recall feeling powerless with stupid policies and official lies. Righteousness is always on your side when dealing with things of such magnitude. You may have to tiptoe a bit, but when dealing with dead wrong issues, you have the high ground. If I had ever witnessed the debacles described, and myself been a part of the charade described, I would have resigned my commission and screamed from the highest mountains.

Military foolishness is one thing, but when there are grave consequences you have to elevate above it. I can think of quite a few situations where friends (figuratively) flicked the middle finger at the rules and did otherwise and never had a scratch on their records. Why, because they were dead right.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@Heartlander I retired in 2015 after 35 years of active duty in both Army and USAF so trust me, I get it, but it's a very different Military than we joined, it's all about covering their asses now, specially in Afghanistan. I did 4 tours there and it wasn't a fun place. Keep your head down and your mouth shut and you might survive to collect a pension was the law of the land. I wasn't involved in "training" the ANA but I knew some who were and Kunce's statement is indeed accurate. Why he felt he couldn't stand up and "flick his middle finger" at what was going on, not my call...
Regardless of whether it's in Afghanistan, Chicago or St Louis; nation building has failed miserably. It failed in Chicago and St Louis for the same reasons it failed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Politicians in Washington have no clues on how to build a neighborhood, or a town, or a community; why do you think they would know how to build a big city or an entire country?

Over the past 20 years, more Americans were murdered in Chicago than in all of Afghanistan. Should we not also pull out of Chicago?
carpediem · M
@Heartlander Why bother. It's already screwed.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@Heartlander Chicago is part of the United States. Afghanistan is a foreign country. If that doesn't explain it for you then you are beyond my help.
@badminton The point is that we didn't abandon it, nor stab the good people there the back when the US abandoned it.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
And that from a demonocrat who is involved in systematically destroying The Constitution. Amusing
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@sunsporter1649 Who is trying to "destroy" the Constitution? Certainly not me. I much admire the system off checks and balances, and the Bill or Rights created by our Constitution's founders.

The only person I have heard attack the Constitution was Donald Trump, who said "That Constitution is a mess." Would-be dictator Trump was frustrated the Constitution limited his powers. I was never more grateful for the checks and balances system.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
