Look at the map - evacuating people from Kabul to Bagram would be an even bigger mess, not to mention that Bagram isn't equipped for civilian flights, and we didn't have the manpower to keep it secured anyhow.
Everything went to shit when the ANA melted, but our choices were all crap at that point.

Choppers could be taking American citizens and our Afghan supporters to Bagram to be removed by military transports. No one is talking about riding a big wheel over there. @QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson We could be moving people around Kabul by helicopter too - the flights would only be shorter 🤷♂️
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul Hey, Mr. Tallybonn, can we borrow your helicopters for a week or so?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 I'm not sure where Jack was planning to get that sort of airlift capacity either - that's a fuckton of people.
Nah, the whole Kabul -> Bagram route makes no sense. Hard enough already.

@QuixoticSoul So your defense is, "Screw them", right?
@QuixoticSoul Sounds like we may be doing some of that.

@sunsporter1649 No defense needed, leaving Bagram was the right decision, especially given our manpower there.

@QuixoticSoul LOL, that's the bestest you can do! A twit! C'mon, you are better than that

@sunsporter1649 Poor sporty, always behind the curve, never quite understanding what is happening or why.
Visas would have let these folks get out last year when they applied.

@QuixoticSoul That is your defense for abandoning the country, in the middle of the night, leaving behind 10,000 American citizens and billions in military equipment, including 45 Blackhawk helicopters? Sick
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 We're still there, numbnuts, evacuating thousands of Americans per day.
Are you really asking why we passed on equipment to our proxy force? Lol what a dork.

@QuixoticSoul That is the bestest you can do to support the incredible boondoggle you have created! What are you, a dog-faced pony soldier?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 You will be shocked that we have been arming the ANA for twenty years, including passing over helicopters and drones. That's how we were able to whittle our forces down to 2500 personnel as of Jan.

@sunsporter1649 Sporty, we've been doing this for twenty years - what do you think Trump was doing when he was downsizing our troop levels over there? Who do you think has been fighting the Taliban all this time?
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul That's the bestest you can come with for abandoning billions of dollars of military equipment to a bunch of raghead terrorists!
jackjjackson · M
What happens when the Taliban bomb craters into the airport at Kabul? @QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 Sporty, we've been arming the ANA with American weapons for twenty years. This is not news to anyone. It's pretty insane that you're whining about this now.
@jackjjackson That would necessitate a robust response, our hands would be tied - which is why the odds of Taliban doing anything of the sort are very low, they are quite eager for us to leave.
This includes four C-130 transport aircraft, 23 Brazilian-made A-29 "Super Tucano" turboprop ground-attack aircraft, 45 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, and 50 smaller MD-530 choppers. In addition, Afghan forces were given more than 30 military versions of Cessna single-engine fixed-wing aircraft.
It's not clear how many of those aircraft are still in Afghanistan. Uzbekistan says that hundreds of Afghan troops fled there last weekend with 22 military planes and 24 helicopters.

@QuixoticSoul You keep pushing that bullschiff, maybe somebody as dumb as you will believe it
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 It's amazing, we've been fighting this war for twenty years, and you don't know the first thing about it.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 I mean, who do you think gave those Blackhawks to Afghans, which were then captured in Khandahar?
In 2017 the decision was made to transition from Russian to U.S. helicopters due to issues with sourcing parts and maintenance because of ongoing diplomatic issues between the US, the AAF main source of funds, and Russia. Consequently, it was decided to replace the AAF Mi-17s with refurbished UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The Department of Defense (DoD) requested $814.5M for 2017, the first year of the plan, to re-equip the Afghan Air Force and to provide funding to procure 53 UH-60s, with refurbishment and modification of the first 18.

@QuixoticSoul Yeppers, leave it all for the raghead terrorists, such a grand plan you have. Typical left-wing nut job, it's all somebody else's fault, we are infallible
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 It was done under Trump, but it's not anyone's fault - arming Afghans made every sense, which is why we did it for twenty years.
