The staff uniform doesn't worry me but I don't frequent the sort of cafe that thinks it necessary to call the counter-staff terms like "barista"!

My brother-in-law told me of a friend or relative of his who asked for a "latte", in a genuine Italian cafe, i.e. in the country of Italy. Then wondered why there was not the slightest hint of coffee in it.

The usual story is that it was invented after the war in Italy because a lot of American soldiers wanted something like the coffee they had at home so an Itialan café diluted an espresso. No idea if the story is really true but that is how an americano is made.
