Here's my opinion: Rights can never be a black/white issue, because the right to any activity/resource always affects everyone else.
Access to healthcare should be a fundamental societal goal, but there is a point of diminishing returns where the energy needed to guarantee an outcome for every scenario eats into the energy needed to maintain the standard of rights in other areas and for other people.
Reasonable people can debate where the line should be drawn on what constitutes an appropriate level of healthcare, but the one rule I believe in is that the power of the decision making should be decentralized as much as possible to the local community, the people at the coalface of consequences always make better choices than some faceless thinktank

I think it is a right for those paying taxes.

@MrBrownstone If that's the case...ONLY those who pay taxes have a right to healthcare.........why does every 1%'er in the U.S. have healthcare?? For the most part they...and the companies the own..don't pay a dime in taxes. Look up what GE..for instance...pays in taxes every year. NOT ONE DIME......and their yearly revenues are never less than $1 trillion a year in corporate profits. Look it up.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@anythingoes477 SOME HEALTH CARE FACILITIES ARE TAX PAYER FUNDED AND SHOULD SEE ANYONE WHOM PAID TAXES. DO YOU UNDERSTAND MY ANSWER??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
anythingoes477 · M
@MrBrownstone I understand you obviously have anger management issues. And I also understand that under equal rights and civil rights laws no one can be turned away from healthcare regardless of if they pay taxes or not. UNDERSTAND THAT?

I believe it's everyone's right to have access to shelter, food, clothing, medical care, etc. as long as it's not done at the expense of others. You can't trample on my rights in order to exercise yours.
As a society we can agree that we'll all pitch in to make sure that those who can't afford something will get it anyway. Different countries handle that differently. Here in the U.S. we don't all give money to the state and then get "free" healthcare, but instead we compensate the hospitals for covering people who can't afford to pay. No one is denied access to healthcare here. They just have to walk into a hospital an ask. If you have money or insurance you can see a private doctor and the same is true in countries with universal "free" healthcare.

Technically speaking, rights are made up.
Having access to medical care at all is a lucky position to be in.
So I wouldn't say it's a right, it is however a privilege.

I certainly think it should be. If every single person is able to call the police or the fire department, and every single person is allowed to attend a public school, then every single person should be able to go to the hospital when they're sick or injured. We've decided that, as a coherent society, some things are so fundamental that everyone needs to be able to access them. What could possibly be more fundamental than healthcare? How can you do anything at all if you don't have your physical health?
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@BlueMetalChick Great argument.
TexChik · F
Nope , it’s not . But tlin the US they are free to conduct themselves in such a way that they are able to obtain it ( education and/ or work )
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
No you don't have the right to someone else's stuff, which includes their money to pay for your healthcare. That said the only way we can afford good health care is do it as a collective. Only a very few can actually afford good healthcare on their own. The rest has to use insurance or government to spread out the risk. I say if you can help it and choose not to contribute to society in some way then you should be left to your own fate.

basic care..yes
quality care has a high price tag

I don’t think any service is a human right.
@BlueMetalChick I was attempting humour but that's actually pretty terrible I hope he gets better. I don't understand how anyone can just shoot into a random group of people hoping to hit a target. Yeah let's ambush him at the playground. It's insane.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@MrBlueGuy I know you were only joking but I guess it's my paranoia talking lol
@BlueMetalChick Hey just because you're paranoid doesn't mean the aliens AREN'T trying to read your brainwaves xD
Doomflower · 41-45, M
My idiot parents taught me that it is your responsibility to take care of your own healthcare. Red dead Republicans who were fairly well off for people who never finished college. I did and I understand concepts they will never grasp. Including healthcare being a right.

@TheArbitrator their opinion is based on brainwashing and racism and total willful ignorance.
CanadianTraveller · 61-69, M
Did you know that Canada does not have a national, universal, free healthcare system?
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@CanadianTraveller What kind of healthcare system does Canada have? I thought it was a two-tier healthcare system with public & private option.
CanadianTraveller · 61-69, M
@TheArbitrator Canada actually doesn't have a national healthcare system. Each province (state) runs their own where it is federally and provincially funded, provincially regulated by regionally administrated.
Some provinces have a private clinic option, but most do not. It is generally a single tier system. My Ontario health card cost me $750 per year just to have the plastic in my wallet, plus I pay about $6,000 to $9,000 per year in healthcare taxes just for me, PLUS, I have a private HMO for the services not covered by the public system.
In Canada, no health care = no health services. Like the U.S., any hospital will fix you on an emergency basis, but be prepared for a very big bill with the expectation that you will pay it upon leaving the hospital.

It is a privilege where I come from. If governments have enough money, they should at least allocate some to healthcare
gregloa · 61-69, M
Problem is the United Nations is funded by the United States, always has been. No United States, no United Nations. Simple as that. Put up or shut up. Anyone can go to the ER and get health care in the United States. They cannot be turned down. It’s always been that way. That doesn’t mean you should expect them to provide a sex change operation. Covid has disrupted hospitals ability significantly but it’s starting to get better now. Another problem is a lot of people are just to lazy to work when they can sit on their tails and get free handouts why not? If you don’t work you don’t eat. Not if you don’t work the government should feed you, provide you with housing and health care and social services. The problem is morals. The United States no longer has any and it should start with the leaders. “Government”

Here's the thing though. Nobody has any "rights". Refer to George Carlin.
