Have you ever stumbled upon a dark family secret?

Have you found out something about your family that was completely unexpected? How did you handle the revelations?

Apparently I had a great uncle that served time in Alcatraz. Beyond that, I know nothing about him as he was pretty much erased from all family records, and it was so long ago, anybody that knew him has long since passed on. I don't even know his name or what he did, that's how efficiently he was wiped from our family's memory.

I'm sure it created a huge amount of drama for the family at the time, but for me it's just kind of a neat trivia fact that I have no emotional attachment to.

Yes! Some of it was quite painful since the discovery came after this family member died and left a lot of written material behind as if to punish from the grave. It changed my perspective of decades worth of memories.

There's documents of a family member that was receiving multiple stories from clients that were experiencing cannibalism and cults inside the Mormon church. One was an official court document. I've asked but no one will talk about it.
