how does pork taste like?

i’ve never had it in my life, it’s just repulsive and it was NEVER allowed in my household due to religious and cultural reasons. i just wonder what it tastes like. i remember watching this documentary about this cannibal and he was describing what humans taste like and he said “it’s like pork but better.” that just made me even more disgusted by it. i barely even eat beef anymore but don’t think i could ever cut off chicken or fish. meat is just kinda gross to me idk whyyyy. but anyways, please lemme know what pig tastes like

Not really sure how to describe it, other than as not very good. IDK if it was the way my family prepared it, but it's a little sweeter than most meats and kinda has a 'smoothness' about it... I'm glad you won't eat them though, pigs are highly social and highly intelligent. Anyone who wouldn't eat a dog on principle should also spare our poor little piggies. 🌺

@BlueVeins pigs are gross babe <3 but yeah whatever let them live

@SW-User Pigs may have a lot of parasites, but humans are parasites. And unlike millennials, pigs only eat shit when they're stuffed into inhumanely small pens or homes. Pigs are fine, we're the ones who are disgusting.

@BlueVeins living for the millennial slander. but yeah you right, maybe we should just sacrifice ourselves already

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of pork, as in pork chops or pork roast. It generally tastes kind of bland, really. Most of the flavor in it comes from whatever herbs and spices you add to it.

Ham is different, though. I love ham. Ham is flavorful on its own, especially when paired with cheese and maybe potato salad on a nice bread. I suppose it's comparable to the difference between light and dark meat chicken — white breast meat from a chicken generally tastes sort of like chewing on cardboard, while the thighs and legs are dark, juicy and flavorful.

Then, of course, there's bacon. A lot of the flavor of bacon comes from the nitrates they use to make it, as well as the texture. Flavorwise, it tastes just like ham, more or less, if you get past the salt, just crispy and crunchy.

This is kind of like trying to describe what the color blue looks like to someone born blind.
It depends. Different pork products taste different. Like bacon is really its own flavor but I feel it has salty and smokey flavors. Probably because of the curing process. Ham has lots of different flavors depending on how it is prepared. It can go from salty beef/bacony like to almost bland and flavorless. And things like porkchops just to me taste like chicken. But chicken that is kind of off. Bad chicken.

@canusernamebemyusername ham looks good ngl but still wouldn't be able to eat it bc my parents will start yelling at me in my head
@SW-User lol I understand. But hey there are still lots of good food out there.

Pork is so tasty. Especially the roast pork that Chinese restaurants make. And of course there is sausage, bacon, and ham. Breakfasts, especially omelettes, would not be the same without ham.

It can be a little fatty, but there are lean parts. The greasy parts are yummy, though.

@JoyfulSilence that doesn't look good to me tbh but hey im glad you enjoy it
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@SW-User If you do not have religious objections, etc., you should try some. You might like it.

I think it is better than fish and chicken, but not as good as beef. Although some fish and chicken parts or prep styles can surpass some pork parts and prep styles.

I think the key with me is it be juicy, dark, and flavorful. For example, I do not like chicken breasts or roast beef that is dried out. The former needs ranch dressing and the latter gravy! With pork, usually it is so flavorful it needs no gravy. Pork chops are yummy.

Pork by itself always struck me being very mild in flavor, with a slight sweetness, possibly saltiness depending on the cut of meat. Pork really excels at picking up other flavors though, so that's why you see so many smoked, cured, and marinated pork products.

Before I became vegetarian, I used to eat ribs, but that's about what my extent of liking pork was. Never understood the whole bacon craze. I stopped eating meat in 2003 and have never had meat since.
SW-User
@basilfawlty89 yeah whatever you left wing vegetarian, pack it up buzzbee
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@SW-User don't mess with me, I'll go make the right wingers cry and torch a police car :P
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@basilfawlty89 I never understood the huge craze with bacon either. I mean, I'll have some once in a while, but it's not something I go crazy for. I mean, it's a slice of pork fat fried in pork fat; it is wildly unhealthy.

Totally agreed on the cheese and honey, that's good stuff!

I haven't eaten red meat in the last 7 years on medical grounds. Pork is like a very soft version of beef.
I have no idea but I'm willing to try it if I ever had a chance to do so.
AlienZipper · 61-69, M
Depends on how much ketchup you pour on it...
Gangstress · 41-45, F
Hmm its a hard taste to describe if honest..

I'm the same with beef. I ate it when younger until my brother told my mum. Then no more beef for me. But it smells like shit when its cooking
SW-User
@Gangstress i'm extremely close to cutting off all red meat. i still have a burger every once in a while, meat shawarma, and shish kabab. those last two are just what i grew up with so they can be tolerated bc of what it's combined with. i just think it tastes weird idk
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@SW-User what about lamb? Do you eat that at all?
BabyLonia · F
it really does depend on the cut of meat and how you prepare it. It is very versatile and tender.

Bacon is one of the best things on earth, people eat that turkey bacon crap and it is nothing compared to proper bacon.

We smoked a leg joint recently that the store gave me for free and it aas so tender.

Pulled pork, ribs, and my son's favourite is sausages.

I saw you mention about animals that eat their own faeces. It really depends on how the animals are kept and where you source your meat from.

I know many people who do not eat it for religious reasons but honestly, when that was written some 2/3000 years ago it made sense for many meats not to be consumed in hot countries with little sanitation. The logic does not really apply still
MethDozer · M
It's the best commercially available meat there is. Any culture against pork is a culture against flavor and that cannot abide.
SW-User
@MethDozer no we just don't eat animals that may have eaten their own feces. we have other strict meat rules ofc but pork is nonnegotiable
MethDozer · M
@SW-User You said you eat chicken.
SW-User
@MethDozer i also said we have strict meat rules lol (chicken is included in that)
