What does it mean to devalue currency? And why is it done?

Back in the Roman times for example.. they woyluld cut a slip of all the coins.. melt them down and make more coins.. thus lowering the purchase power

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Well, the thing I'm reading said Nero was the first Roman Emperor to do it so he could rebuild after the big fire, not to mention help him build his new palace. Bloody great big thing.
