What experience taught you to be more selfish?

I'm currently pretty frustrated. A lot of it is with myself. I feel like I'm doing too many favors for others and putting my life on pause. I need to learn to be more selfish.

The time I paid for a girl's drinks because her friend died and then she and her friend proceeded to ignore me and pay attention to some guy who was deliberately being an asshole to everyone.
