It means the parent is so horribly insecure in their own looks, yet is such a narcissist, that they view their child as they would view themselves.
The child does not have their own identity in the eyes of the parent.
In other words, the narcissist parent sees the child simply as an extension of herself. (It's something that happens with female parents more often than in male parents).
If the narcissist parent has very low self esteem, the child can look like a beautiful child fashion model and the parent will be unable to see the reality.
I grew up in a barrage of criticism about my own appearance. IF the child asserts themselves, the narcissist parent will begin to see them (dimly), as the attractive creatures they are, and as rivals. THEN it will get even worse.

@curiosi My poor mother was actually a beauty at one time. She had long black hair, and gorgeous high cheekbones. But she did not know how to curl her own hair, did not know how to use makeup, and did not know anything about how to dress or what shoes to wear with what. She was a farmer's daughter, but worse, belonged to a religion that considered vanity sinful.
Unfortunately if you combine the lack of feminine education with low self esteem and sheer and utter laziness, she cut off her beautiful hair, (and mine), and began to put on weight. Then she just got...mean.
