It's a reference to judgement day. Blood mixed in the blue sky gives purple rain. He made a similar reference in 1999 too

@SW-User I'm not really a Prince fan so I don't read deeply into his lyrics. I heard that song today.

@Crazychick We used to play Purple Rain in a covers band I was in. I remember a discussion one day about the lyrics and the singer made the judgement day reference and linked it to 1999 too. He was a big fan so I don't doubt he was right.
