We don't have one, only de facto languages.
DudeistPriest · M
Although 31 states have their own laws proclaiming English as the official language on the state level, the United States has no official language on the federal level. The debate about whether or not to adopt an official language has been going on since at least the 1750s. However for all business and practical purposes, English is the de facto official language spoken in the U.S.
Nimbus · M
@DudeistPriest I wonder why it has never been settled.
DudeistPriest · M
@Nimbus Not sure, but if I had to guess I figure because it may seem a bit un-American. According to the census, millions of American citizens speak Spanish, German, Vietnamese, French, etc... As a Spanish speaking native born American I both appreciate and love what this country has given me. But to force people of different cultures to only speak English seems a bit like telling them to forget their heritage and traditions.
Now excuse me while I make this tasty lunch...

Have I got this right... Back in 17?? when they voted on it English won by 1 vote over German. If that'd gone the other way history would've been a bit different?
Valentine · M
English, albeit a quite unintelligible and, dare I say simply vulgar version of it.

Well it's not the crowns English.
I have once heard it called living English. Which makes far more sense.
It's allowed to live and breathe. Change is more fitting to life.

@DeWayfarer Indeed, change is essential.
Rosejilly · 56-60, F
@DeWayfarer There's English & English. Google Newcastle or Glasgow & listen to someone talking. PS- to talk "Queens English" say 'ears' instead of 'yes'.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Rosejilly yet there are those who "calm" to be English that critic American English as if there is only one version. 😔
