Can You Be Christian and Still Listen To Metal?

I listen to metal. Many of my friends and peers now know this about me and seem to behave differently around me. Thoughts?

You can claim to be a Christian. A lot of people claim to be Christian. But where's your heart? Is your heart truly after Christ if you are entertaining the devil? Or don't you know that is the devil's music?

@SW-User Can you elaborate on this a bit more?

Take a moment to think about the things Jesus promoted and compare them to metal. Jesus promoted Peace, love, family, charity, obedience & submission to your heavenly father, God. Metal, on the other hand is grim, It depicts chaos , destruction and lostness.

@SW-User Metal is the horror genre of music. Dark themes, violence, anger. Yet, for the majority of metal bands, it's story telling. Stephen King isn't evil because he writes about evil. Wes Craven wasn't a monster for making Nightmare on Elm Street. Angus Scrimm wasn't any less of a good person because he portrayed the Tall Man in Phantasm. Likewise, Dave Brockie never killed anyone, although the character he portrayed in GWAR 'did'.

Blues, Rock and Roll, and Jazz have been classified in the past as 'the devil's music'. Let's stop using that as a term for 'something I don't like." Music is music is music, and any genre can have dark themes (Garth Brooks Thunder Rolls, for a country example) or positivity. Even a theme that might seem dark can actually be a positive message (Metallica's Master of Puppets, is basically 'drugs are bad, mmmkay')

@InvictusIndigo Evil is a reality. We should not pretend as if evil doesn't exist, but the question we should ask ourselves when reading these works or listening to musical artists is: what is the author trying to convey? What ideas are being promoted? Stephen King's books, for the most, contain good social commentary, good almost always prevails over evil. Stephen King doesn't promote fear or hopelessness . So, we have to take it on a case by case basis. We can't just say, it's All the same genre so its all ok. Look at the context of the individual work and discern whether or not the message is appropriate and coincides with your beliefs.

@SW-User Of course it's not all the same in the same genre. There are metal bands who truly are pieces of shit. Mayhem, for example. But the same can be said for anything. There are horrible people regardless of what music they play, stories they write, or message they supposedly preach.

That's kinda the point. you can't lump any genre of anything into 'good' or 'evil'. There are just people.

And sometimes the 'promotion' of fear or hopelessness is used as the social commentary. A lot of the evil and/or dark themes in metal are metaphors. Or used as a catharsis to work through hopelessness. Metal isn't evil because on the surface it may appear to be. Again, it's horror in musical form
