How many years have you been at your place of work? Apart from the wage, what keeps you there?

Today starts my fourth week.
I’m still the newbie but know this is where I belong.

That's good. @Pinkstarburst

I've been in my current position for about 7.5 years, but I've been with the organization for 28.5 years.

My salary isn't the greatest, but it's OK enough. The benefits are really, really good. I love the atmosphere — I came here to attend the university and just never left. Unlike a job out in the commercial world, we aren't faced with a constant pressure to make a profit or anything like that. The specific organization I work for, for example, has a large endowment that covers most of our expenses. Our just is to carry out our mission and not worry about things like that. The bosses are pretty cool, which is nice.

More importantly is that I'm at an age now where finding a new job would be problematic. Most places don't want to hire someone my age, and I'll admit that my skill set hasn't kept up with changes in technology as much as I'd like. So, for the moment at least, I'm secure here, and I hope that that continues until I'm ready to retire.

That sounds great. Long may it continue until you retire. @DunningKruger

I’ve doing the same kind of work since I was 14 but at many different locations throughout Europe and the Far East 🙂
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
You 'get about a bit'.🤣@Dlrannie

nedkelly · 61-69, M
6.5 years, and no it's not the wage that keeps me here it is the job that i do to help people
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
I think the feeling that you've made a difference is important to most of us. @nedkelly

Since late summer of 2014. It's a healthcare clinic, and I've liked it much better than the hospital where I was for 4 years before. It's smaller and definitely not as crazy.
SW-User
@pennynoodles Thanks. A hospital was too overwhelming for me as a nurse.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
It is a hard place to work. Respect to you. @SW-User

@pennynoodles Thanks 🙂.
JustNik · 51-55, F
20 years. It has always allowed me a good work/life balance, it plays to strengths, the people are nice, the place has a history I enjoy, the benefits are good, there’s been a raise every year, and I basically enjoy the subject matter I’m immersed in all day.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
It seems we are a loyal lot on here 😀@JustNik
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
A good reason to stay then!@Threepio
I just started 6 months ago. I like it because the department I am in is small, and I really like my coworkers. Most of all I really enjoy teaching.

I do not want to start over someplace new. I am considered an expert where I am now. That's a laugh. I am only an expert because others don't know shit.
Pinto · 61-69, M
17 years until the place closed down last month. <sigh>
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
Oh no, sorry to hear that.@Pinto
Pinto · 61-69, M
@pennynoodles Thanks, but no worries...I have interviews lined up and I'm enjoying my "vacation" time by tackling at-home projects usually reserved for weekends.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
That's good, it can be very demoralising being made redundant.@Pinto
sciguy18 · M
I am going on year 36 (started there in 1984). Apart from the wages, I enjoy what I do.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
36 is a very long time. No wonder they never threaten you with redundancy- the payout would be huge! 😀@sciguy18
MrAboo · 36-40, M

22 years. It's a perfect fit for me, and I'm the boss so I can't quit!
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
I haven't worked in 7 years I gave that up
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
I could probably give up by my husband can't afford to stop working; he earns a lot more than me. @tiggerandariel13
