Establishments have an additional phone line as well as the one they use for the phone.

This second line is for Fax machines.
Machines that allow you to send documents of text and pictures via a machine looking like an old electric typewriter into which you dial the number of the place you want to send it to. Await a response. Then feed the documents through the machine which then 'photographs' it. Then sends the information (coded into Binary) along a telephone line to be received at the other end where their machine de-codes the info. into the original document.

By using up hours of my time, still producing nothing, and driving me to distraction. I recently thought I'd got the answer to my non-existent prayers when a female relative with an I.T. degree offered to show me. At least I saved her the cost of a hairdresser. By the time she finished she'd torn it all out.

Very poorly over a VoIp phone line.

With a 1 page fax there's a 70% success rate on the first try.
With a 2 page fax, the odds are down to about 50%
At 3 pages, you are down to 20-30%
For anything over 5 pages the USPS is faster.

It takes a picture and crumples it up and forces it through the cable into the wall where lil ‘lectric gremlins catch it, check the destination address and scurry away at incredible speed to repeat the process in reverse at the other end. The receiving fax machine has an ironing board and smooths out the paper and spits it into a tray.
