"Race" seems to appeal to the school children we all once were. As adults is that term rather irrelevant? Yes, to a degree.

For humans, meaningless.
For animals, a word used by breeders, with only pragmatical meaning and purpose and no deep scientific foundations.

No. Race is real and it plays a role in medicine, education, and many other things in life. What's done with that information is what makes the difference.

In Australia from the 1950s to 1970s, bigots treated Italians and Greeks with disdain because most people were white, but they were the most different. When more Asians and Africans arrived, the attitude shifted to them.

I think this demonstrates that some people have a predilection to hate anything that they define as different, 'other'.
