Is the term "race" meaningless?

In Australia from the 1950s to 1970s, bigots treated Italians and Greeks with disdain because most people were white, but they were the most different. When more Asians and Africans arrived, the attitude shifted to them.

I think this demonstrates that some people have a predilection to hate anything that they define as different, 'other'.
